Vietnam Demolitions Pit Catholic Church Against Authorities

BANGKOK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The demolition of about 100 homes near Ho Chi Minh City, including one owned by the Catholic Church, has pitted the church against authorities in the latest such dispute over land in the Communist Party-ruled country.

Residents in Tan Binh district received no warning of the demolitions earlier this month and were given little compensation, according to local media reports.

Land conflicts have risen in Vietnam since the ruling Communist Party launched its economic reforms, or doi moi, in the late 1980s, which resulted in more farming land being taken over to build highways and large industrial zones.

Disputes over property between Catholics and authorities are common, and have posed one of the key obstacles to a normalization of relations with the Vatican.

“Historically, the party-state has distrusted the Catholic Church because of its close connection to the French colonial government,” said John Gillespie, director of the Asia-Pacific Business Regulation Group at Monash University in Melbourne.

Church land was taken over by the state after 1954 in the North, although some of the land was returned during the 1980s and 1990s when the government relaxed its opposition to organized religion, he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

If Alex Cortez and those like her get their way, this same story will be written all across the lower 48.

They are ALL communists at heart.

The people absconding with the land are all communist party members. They take anyone’s land, but especially any land or building owned by the Church.

Sounds like California and New York.

Well, sort of.

In California they confiscate farms to build high speed rail roads from no-where to no-where.

And then don’t build it.

What’s is going on in Viet Nam is the result of this;
Not dare refer to the most costly and disgraceful results from a “shutdown” that happened during Nixon’s presidency. Caused by the democrats refusal to stand by the Vietnamese effort to remain independent by refusing them air support and supplemental funding of arm supplies which would have prevented that loss and that humiliating disgraceful evacuation of our Saigon embassy.

Which quickly then resulted in a multitude of Vietnamese being slaughtered and the sacrifices of thousands of our armed forces paying with their 58,000 lives assisting them in their fight for freedom dishonored..

While there might be a parallel drawn to the recent decision to pull our troops out of the nation building quagmire known as Syria. Those media resources doing so will be the same ones who supported the ignominious Vietnamese abandonment using the same hue and cry of no nation building (Which we were not doing. We were asked to help. Although JFK expanded it into that by the removal of President Diem.

Yes it is. By coincidence, I’m in Saigon at this moment, in a cab on the way to the airport. Next stop: Bangkok!
