Fasting sounds so simple, and yet the world, our flesh, and the devil conspire to introduce all sorts of complications that keep it from happening. In view of helping you start down the slow path to good fasting, here are six simple pieces of advice...
1. Start small.
Dont go from no fasting to attempting a weeklong. Start with one meal; maybe fast one meal a week for several weeks. Then try two meals, and work your way up to a daylong fast. Perhaps eventually try a two-day juice fast.
A juice fast means abstaining from all food and beverage, except for juice and water. Allowing yourself juice provides nutrients and sugar for the body to keep you operating, while also still feeling the effects from going without solid food. Its not recommended that you abstain from water during a fast of any length.
2. Plan what youll do instead of eating.
Fasting isnt merely an act of self-deprivation, but a spiritual discipline for seeking more of Gods fullness. Which means we should have a plan for what positive pursuit to undertake in the time it normally takes to eat. We spend a good portion of our day with food in front of us. One significant part of fasting is the time it creates for prayer and meditation on Gods word or some act of love for others.
Before diving headlong into a fast, craft a simple plan. Connect it to your purpose for the fast. Each fast should have a specific spiritual purpose. Identify what that is and design a focus to replace the time you would have spent eating. Without a purpose and plan, its not Christian fasting; its just going hungry...

I listened to a great program on 88.3 by Drew Mariani. He had a guest who was talking about fasting.
The starting slow was part of the process, too.
I did an 18 hour fast the first day and then had to eat.
It’s fasting and prayer that will change our world, not just prayer alone.
I eat just one meal a day in a 1-2 hour window. Ive lost six pounds since the beginning of the year.
Fasting is good for the spirit and good for the body. It is a gift.
'09 when Obama Care became law of the land.
That is great.
One of the guest’s testimonies on that radio show was about losing weight. The doctor asked him what diet he used, and he responded, no diet — I just fasted.
On the program they talked about this fasting giving you more energy and alertness, too.
Amazing!
What were your results?
That Obama Care was a weight loss program due to not affording meals due to loosing business?
Good, sound advice.
I do an 16-18 hour fast every day. Intermittent fasting.
I think it is a rule.
In '04 I had a long talk with God, told him what was unfolding and that I would not survive it. Did not ask him for anything for myself, just what would happen if it went through.
God eliminated the situation.
That is all I will say about it.
It really does. It helps all sorts of aches and pains, too. I’ve seen arthritis sufferers get relief from various forms of fasting.
It helps to give more time to focus on what is truly eternal as well.
The first whole day is the hardest.
After that days 2,3 or 4 are actually easy.
Haven’t done anything longer.
After 3 days, you’d be amazed how good some foods taste.
Taste buds seem more sensitive.
Once you do a few separate fasts, cravings or “needs” for food drops.
Your body is keeping an eye out for the next meal.
Good post. I do a weekly 24 hour fast starting Saturday noon ending Sunday noon. Pretty easy to do. Just water. Considering longer but infrequent fasts.
Loved your movie “Being There”. Would love a copy can’t seem to find it anywhere. Anyway, fasting is a factor in prolonging one’s lifetime for sure and keeps people from all sorts of ailments like gout, diabetes and heart disease. Got to keep the multivitamins coming in or the immune system goes down.
Dont fast
Cleanse
Psyllium husk and cascara sagrada
Triphala
I like the arise and shine folks. Dr Richard Anderson
Much much more powerful than fasting alone
I did that in 1994. Many fastings and cleansings since.
Each has its benefits, but I would agree with doing a potent cleanse before any serious fasting.
Many are too toxic after a lifetime of no fasting or cleansing, and much processed food, to safely start with a complete water fast.
