Too many Christians shy away from the social gospel, Pope Francis said Monday, because they are afraid the Church will end up looking like the communist party.

Yeah, so I am afraid of communism especially since I spent the better part of 30 years studying it.

This is what a large main dish of institutionalism with a small side dish of gospel Christianity is going to look like. Everything is going to have a worldly bias. And by no means is it a Roman Catholic problem only. It also happens in Protestant mainline.
There is a V-word associated with the way the early gospel church lived, and that’s Voluntary. It would have laughed at the idea of taking over an entire country until the second advent of Jesus Christ — and it wouldn’t have aspired to it no matter how tough its trials.
If Jesus had to say something to modern churches it would surely include “Get out of the general politics business and back in the Christianity business.”
