A man who lived in ancient times, steeped to his eyeballs in the Christianity of the Greco-Roman world, even to the point of devoting his life to the study of sacred scripture, combating Donatism, serving the victims of war and famine, and advancing Christian music and worship, is denigrated because he "was a poor student of the Bible."
