Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

2 Samuel 6

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

6 David again brought together all the able young men of Israel—thirty thousand. 2 He and all his men went to Baalah[a] in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name,[b] the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim on the ark. 3 They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart 4 with the ark of God on it,[c] and Ahio was walking in front of it. 5 David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets,[d] harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals.

6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. 7 The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.

8 Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.[e]

9 David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, “How can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?” 10 He was not willing to take the ark of the Lord to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed him and his entire household.

12 Now King David was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.

17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes.

20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”

21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”

23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

It is easier to understand Michal's nasty reaction to David's joyous dancing, now that we understand that, after she had been re-married to another man who seemed to love her, David forced her to return to him! (Even though he had several other wives.)

Almighty Father, teach us daily that it is You, not we, who are in control.
Take away our Pride in thinking we can micromanage every situation,
not depending on You, but doing what is right in our own eyes.
Teach us to welcome the assistance and advice of our loved ones and brethren,
As You see fit to delegate the ministry among Your Children.

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We pray for an END to Lies,
Slander, Blood Libel,
Propaganda, and Antisemitism.
We Pray For An End to Slavery,
Hostage-Taking, and Piracy,
Wherever it is Practiced Around the World.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.
We Plead For Israeli Control Over All the Holy Sites in Israel,
So that All Faiths may visit them.
We Pray For The People in Jerusalem,
That They may have peaceful neighborhoods.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Because my profession brings me into people's homes, giving their children music lessons, it also exposes me to their private lives in a way that teachers in classrooms do not experience. Sometimes this is a truly wonderful transaction, and like an Au Pair or Nanny, I am treated as part of the family. I involve the parents in the lessons by having them video me playing the homework assignment, so that the parent will know just what is expected of the practice sessions until my return a week later. This usually works out very well.

Sometimes, however, people try to drag me into family disputes and get me to take sides. Last week had me scrambling to alter both the times and locations of the lessons of TWO different students because of divorces. Naturally, the person making the arrangements with me were very dramatic about how evil the opposing spouse was. Knowing I would only get their side of the story, the offended spouses both tried to enlist me to "their side". I had to respond in a professional but compassionate manner, and said I only wanted to do what was best for the child, and would alter my schedule any way I could, but would not get involved in the divorce. It was very hard for me, especially two in one week, but I remembered the same thing happened a lot in Florida. It is a sad comment on the state of the family in America.

Most of us are familiar with the story of David dancing with joy as he brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. We talked about this story when we did our study on the Temple, and I presented it as an illustration of the different ways that people worship the Lord. Most of us were not pleased with Michal's reaction to David, and indeed, she was punished for it with infertility, which was a big deal back then.

In context, however, we can see that Michal was not the monster we have made her out to be. Although she once loved David, her own father used her as a political ploy to assert power over the man she loved. David was forced to flee, leaving her abandoned in the palace. Then, her father married her off to someone else, mostly to spite David. How humiliating!

After this, Michal seemed to have a happy marriage with the new husband, perhaps making the best of it. Meanwhile David, on the run, has gathered several more wives, and seems to have forgotten her.

The news of her father and brothers' deaths must have been devastating, but even worse, David wanted her back, and gave the task of "fetching" her to Abner. Her second husband followed her all the way back to the place of her abduction, weeping, and is sent away. And now, Michal is stuck in the palace, still grieving her father, brothers, and second husband, and sees David dancing around with the young women of Jerusalem.

So, you see, there are two sides to every story, and context is very important when reading Scripture! For years I thought that Michal was a shallow, mean-spirited woman, especially because she criticized the way a man worshiped God. This was exacerbated by my being in Music Ministry for many years and had to battle a lot of criticism for my style of music. Reading this story slowly in context has opened my eyes to other people's pain and how they express it to others. And THAT has been a great spiritual lesson for me.

So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite.

And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obededom, and all his household.

And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.

And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.

And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.

And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.

Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!

And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD.

And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.

Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.
