OBITUARY — JESUS OF NAZARETH

Jerusalem, Israel — Nisan 16, A.D.33

Jesus Christ of Nazareth died on Friday Nisan 14 on Calvary, also known as Golgotha, the place of the Skull, just outside of Jerusalem, capital of Israel. The causes of His death were extreme exhaustion, severe torture, and loss of blood caused by crucifixion. He was betrayed by one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot by order of Pontius Pilot.

Jesus Christ, a descendent of Abraham, was a member of the House of David. He was the son of the late Joseph of Nazareth, a carpenter, and Mary, a devoted mother. He is survived by His mother. His brothers and sisters, His disciples, and many other followers and friends.

Jesus was educated at home and spent most of His life working as a carpenter, then as a traveling teacher-preacher. Up until the time of His death, the last three years of His short Life were spent teaching and sharing the Good News (about salvation through Him), healing the sick, ministering to the lonely, feeding the hungry and helping the poor.

He was most noted for His sharing of many parables about His Father’s Kingdom. He performed numerous miracles, such as feeding over 5,000 people, healing a man born blind and raising a dead man from his tomb. On the day before His death He celebrated the Passover meal with His disciples, at which time He foretold of His death.

The body of Jesus was quickly buried in a garden tomb near Calvary, and was donated by a friend named Joseph of Arimathea, himself a committed believer in Jesus as the Jewish Messiah. By order of Pontius Pilate, a huge stone was rolled over the entrance of the tomb. A group of sixteen Roman soldiers was placed on guard at the tomb.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that all truly study His teachings, consider His basic message—“Repent and Believe the Gospel”—and seek to live as He lived. Donations may be sent or given to anyone you know who is truly in need of food, clothes or help.

BUT WAIT A MINUTE, NOTE THIS—Something very unexpected happened on the third day after the death and burial of Jesus Christ!!! The stone was rolled away, His tomb was empty, and His body was gone. Several eyewitnesses (some women, the soldiers there guarding the tomb and two disciples) verified this fact. And some of these witnesses reported to having seen an angel at the tomb.

BUT NOTE THIS—The body of Jesus was found!!! Amazingly, miraculously, He had arisen bodily from the dead. The day of His resurrection He was seen alive, and He talked with several people. Some of those who saw Him and talked with Him included Mary Magdalene, some other women, a man named Cleopas and his wife, the Apostle Peter and the other disciples.

No other person has ever been known to have risen from the dead, displaying power over death!!!!! Jesus Himself had predicted He would rise from the dead. It remains to be seen how this man’s death and resurrection will, in days to come, impact this city, the nation or even the whole world.

I believe the cause of death would officially be due to positional asphyxiation from being nailed to a cross, hastened by the severe flogging he received a few hours prior.

He is risen, made lighter... a lot of levity even.

Can you believe the shameless puns?

John 20

11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

It was an honest mistake.

People just aren't prepared. What can you do.

Why Did Jesus Fold the Napkin?

This is one I can honestly say I have never seen circulating so; if this touches you, you may want to forward it.

Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? I never noticed this....

The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed separate from the grave clothes. Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, ‘They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and I don’t know where they have put him!’ Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see.. The other disciple outran Peter and got there first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn’t go in.

Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying to the side.

Was that important? Absolutely!

Is it really significant? Yes!

In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition.

When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it...

The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was finished. Now, if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table.

The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the wadded napkin meant, ‘I’m done.’

But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, because........... The folded napkin meant, ‘I’m coming back!’

He is Coming Back!

If anyone has ever wondered the significance of the Angels in the empty Tomb, here is a great explanation. I would highly encourage everyone to read it, then to open the worship link below to fully appreciate the worship song.

Why, therefore, does John point out that Mary saw the two angels? And why is he so specific about where they sat?

The Evangelists, particularly John, only provide the details they want you to know. And John very much wants us to understand the significance of those angels and why they sat as they did. It is written in Exodus 25:18-22:

And thou shalt make two cherubim of gold; of beaten work shalt thou make them, at the two ends of the mercy-seat. And make one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other end: of one piece with the mercy-seat shall ye make the cherubim on the two ends thereof. And the cherubim shall spread out their wings on high, covering the mercy-seat with their wings, with their faces one to another; toward the mercy-seat shall the faces of the cherubim be. And thou shalt put the mercy-seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy-seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

As all good Israelites would know, God commanded Moses and Israel to build Him first a Tabernacle, and in the Most Holy Place in that Tabernacle would rest the Ark of the Covenant containing the two tablets of the Ten Commandments, a powerful sign of the covenant between God and Israel. On top of that Ark was the “mercy-seat,” and the mercy-seat was flanked on either side by cherubim. The mercy-seat is where God placed His presence and spoke to Moses; the mercy-seat is also where Aaron would bring the blood of the sacrifice to make atonement for himself and Israel (Leviticus 16:11-16). When Solomon built the Temple he built cherubim on both sides of the Most Holy Place for the same purpose (1 Kings 6:23-28).

Agreed. While His blood was shed for us, he didn’t die due to loss of blood.

It could also be said that he died because of MY sin.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me. let me hide myself in Thee. And the water and the blood, from His wounded side which flowed, is to me a double cure, save from wrath and make me pure.

I recall an evaluation of the Shroud of Turin by some medical doctors. It was pretty interesting the part about the water and the blood. The blood from the heart - and then iirc, water from the lungs due to fluid build-up due to Crucifixion.

Well, it’s interesting, to say the least.

OTOH, I suppose that one could conclude that He left the tomb in the condition it would have been set up in for Joseph of Arimethea so that the tomb would be ready for him when he needed it, since Jesus was finished with it.

Yes, I know all about the shroud, but the thought occurs to me that maybe when He was raised, the grave clothes were returned to their original condition.

I suppose that some day we’ll find out the truth about the whole thing, if we even care about details like that when we see His face.

The thing about the shroud that complicates its authenticity is this passage.

Here it clearly says there was a face cloth and it was folded up and lying off to the side.

The Shroud of Turin is one piece.

Another thing is the shroud shows an unmarred face with a full bread.

Prophecy indicates Jesus’ beard was ripped out. Also, His face would have borne the marks of the beating He took, and no doubt cuts from the crown of thorns and the lashing. I don’t believe that the flogging He received was confined to His back. I don’t think the Romans would have taken care to be so neat and precise about a flogging like that.
