For the first years of Christianity -- the Apostolic Era --- the written Gospels didn't exist as yet. Paul kept exhorting people to adhere to the "Gospel" before one Gospel was written.
His watchword to his communities? Rely on the Scriptures (the 46-book Septuagint they had from the Lois and Eunice generation) and beyond that, "Stand fast and hold the traditions you were taught, by word or by our epistle."
Eventually it was the Holy Spirit --- via inspiration and "calling to mind", remembrance (which is Tradition) --- ---which sourced the four Gospels a generaion or two later. They were not transcribed from an audiotape, but from the mind of a Spirit-led, remembering Christian community.
Scripture was identified, and protected, by Tradition.
And as soon as dumping Tradition got into full gear 500 years ago, seven books of the Bible were dropped! By whose authority, I would like to know!
And the process of "peeling off" has continued to this day. It progresses in its mazey through Sola Scriptura until it runs out of the continuity, the koinonia which guarantees its authenticity -- then goes on to Masonism--- and ends up with, voila! Jorge Bergoglio!
A religious genius like Luther! But going one better,an anti-papal Pope!
These are surreal days, when the head mover-and-shaker of the Dump Tradition movement turns out to be none other than the Bishop of Rome.
You're preemptively forgiven! Pecca fortiter!
I didn’t think you’d admit it.
After all, according to you, you’re the *him* around here.
So what’s the problem? Don’t like the obvious being pointed out? Reality can be a .... er tough to swallow sometimes, can’t it? Too bad. It’s YOUR church.
Catholicism is on life support at best.
God is not the one protecting the den of filth.
The only one protecting anything in Catholicism is Satan by protecting the priests who molest boys and those who are doing the protecting.
Catholicism forfeited the right to call itself the body of Christ millennia ago when the homosexual problem was rampant then and nobody did anything about it then either.
Balderdash.
Essentially you're saying that if you hit the delete button on Scripture, God disappears from the screen.
The word of God is inspired Scripture and stands on it's own merits regardless of what man thinks of it or who gives it their approval, INCLUDING Catholicism.
Catholicism does NOT supersede the very utterances of God even if they recognize it as such.
But you follow the traditions of man based on what?
You can't find *sacred tradition* in Scripture and the claim of *sacred tradition* being equivalent to Scripture because it's our tradition is (basically because we say so) is pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.
It's meaningless to have self-proclaimed authority.
I agree with 2 Timothy 3:14-17. But where’s the “sola”(”only”)part of it? Do you agree with the following Scriptures?
“So then, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.” - 2 Thess 2:15
“[T]he church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” - 1 Tim 3:15
Seems to contradict the assertion:
Jesus intentionally omitted telling his disciples many things ...
Good catch. Very good catch. Like it was just out there waiting to be caught to clarify things.
Where can the faithful go these days for what the Church once offered?
The pews are thinning and will only diminish more rapidly as this heretical lunacy continues to issue forth from bergoglio.
“The word of God is inspired Scripture”
Yes, and who whittled the 400 books floating around in the early centuries of Christianity, “The Gospel of Thomas” for example, down to the 72 that was decided were “inspired” by God. A council of the Catholic Church. This is supposed to be ignored as if the 72(or 66, what an unfortunate number)books of the Bible just fell out of the sky. Talk about “self-proclaimed authority”.
I guess God’s rules aren’t good enough. :-(
I just happened to notice.
I just finished year 3 of a 4 year Catholic Biblical School, and just over 3 years of weekday Mass, since I retired.
The study and instruction certainly helps focus and understand the daily readings.
the apostles are not around teaching by word of mouth any more. The scriptures we have. Christ was. sry pointed in quoting scripture to teach His disciples. Proclamations by Roman popes hundreds of years later-not so much.
Yes, thats what got my attention!
and looking up!
I agree with you--- and I daresay Catholicism, rightly called such, agrees with you. No sound Catholic thinks Scripture can be superseded.
It seems increasingly, though, that Pope Francis believes Scripture can be superseded. He makes more and more reference to this "Spirit of Surprises" which is nothing other than the Zeitgeist, the Spiritus Mundi.
Which is why he the ultimate negative answer to the now-serious question, "Is the Pope Catholic?"
“The Scriptures we have” from whom? Who decided which of the 400 books floating around in early Christianity were inspired and which were not?
You must be quite the theologian.
i did not ask your forgiveness. Scripture has stood on its own for centuries. The new testament was complete by the end of the first century before those who walked with Christ were all dead. It has been pointed out many times that Christ himself taught from scripture, that scripture in itself states all scripture is God breathed and appropriate for teaching. Scripture itself states that anyone who adds to these words will be cursed. You may be forgiven your presumption adding your sects tradition to be equal with scripture if you ask.
Indeed. Every day! Maranatha!
Actually I find her theology to be quite sound
