If you read the ancient sources, particularly those from about AD 300 to AD 700, you'll see that even the average person of that era had an opinion about very complex aspects of Christian theology. They discussed it as much as average Americans today talk about sports. Christian theology was an all-consuming passion for many Romans of that era and many people knew large chunks of Sacred Scripture by heart.
