New Survey Shows Notre Dame’s Ongoing Loss of Catholic Identity
Church Militant ^ | 11/5/19 | William Mahoney

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (ChurchMilitant.com) - A new survey conducted by Notre Dame reveals that the university named after "Our Lady" has continued to lose its Catholic identity, which one pro-Catholic, pro-Notre Dame group ascribes mainly to a lack of Catholic representation on the faculty.

Church Militant reached out to William Dempsey, a Notre Dame graduate and chairperson of the board for Sycamore Trust, an organization of Notre Dame alumni and friends that seeks to protect "the school's formative heritage — its Catholic identity and its sustaining relationship to the Church."

"The survey is statistically meaningless because the participants were not selected randomly or representationally," said Dempsey. "Since alumni who are happy with the university were more likely to respond than those that are indifferent or disaffected, the percentages presented are likely to be skewed in Notre Dame's favor."

Even if the survey was skewed in Notre Dame's favor, the results are still troubling, said Dempsey, noting:

1. 26% of those responding don't feel good about the school. One cannot tell why but it is suggestive that

2. Only 59% felt "good" about Notre Dame's "Catholic character," and

3. "Catholic character" ran a close second to "Academics" among alumni "Passions," with, surprisingly perhaps, "Athletics" lagging well behind in fourth place.

Notre Dame has been a cursed institution ever since it invited the abortion loving Obama to give its commencement speech and bestowed on the vile man an honorary degree. The place is rotting from within.

That’s OK, the ImPopester isn’t very Catholic, either.

Buttwipe doesn’t get to be mayor of South Bend without the votes from ND students and faculty.

Shut it down! No point of existing if these institutions that do not contribute to spreading the faith and the gospel. Clearly ineffective.

The Communists infiltrated American Catholic institutions a long time ago. The damage is done.

I went to Marquette, where the priests absolutely hated girls. Should have gone to Notre Dame...actually, back then, it was a different school for girls, but on the ND campus.

But now? Yikes, they are all cursed...or at least nasty. Actually, I don’t care.

VETO!

Notre Dame has been a cursed institution ever since it invited the abortion loving Obama to give its commencement speech.

* * *

I graduated from ND in 1974. It was an all-male college then. Quite a bit different today, I suppose.

In the dormitory, they said Mass every night and it was a very good spiritual thing, though I didn’t go often.

But in hindsight, there were only a few classes where the teacher really was inspiring. Not so sure what I learned there except living away from home.

The decay is predictable given how academics stick together and are the original conformists to the Leftist anti-gospel.

I will never give a nickel to them as an alum. But I like what Liberty University is doing. They are carrying the mantle of the Christian university — all power to them.

Ultimately, I think Catholicism has suffered because they can no longer attract the caliber of men they used to in the old days — with the exception of places like Poland. Notre Dame even hired Buttgeig’s father as a professor.

If the fig tree bears no fruit, it should be struck down.

Notre Dame isn’t important. The Church is dying, and quickly.

Your point about Catholicism failing to attract people of caliber, faith filled, intelligent, courageous to speak truth to power and dedicated to fill its leadership, clergy and teaching posts is spot on. Suspect the vast majority of the Notre Dame faculty is predictably agnostic. When was the last time anyone associated with Notre Dame spoke against abortion or even condemned homosexual predatory behavior violating minors. Also if you listen to most Bishops and Cardinals carefully, it becomes very apparent that these men reached their positions not so much for their holiness or dedication to the Church but rather for their political and social skills.

Notre Dame’s campus is mostly outside the city of South Bend; thus the students can’t vote in municipal South Bend elections.

That said, the Petester is a real stain on northern Indiana.

Not to step under the shadow of religion:
ND lost when TPTB agreed to cover the fact of GOD and RELIGION when the Dark Won requested they do so before he spoke. SATAN commands? and ND bows to the request? Never should have happened.
ND has a football team (or they once did). “I don’t know nufin ‘bout college education they provide”

History is filled with spoiled Popes. Why is that? History has also shown Holy Popes who make the world a better place. This generation, fortunate we were well acquainted with one such as he.

I would still gather that many students live off-campus within the boundaries of South Bend.

I'm sure the Dark Won relished his ND achievement. One more conquest on the way to destroying America's soul. But the legacy of the King is not looking so good these days.

I am in Pittsburgh. I know many people who grew up with and were personal friends of Archbishop Wuerl. You are SOOOOOOOO spot-on with that observation!

The more diplomatic ones refer to him as "a political animal" and the more blunt-spoken call him "a butt-kisser".

Recently made my first trip to South Bend.

Aside from a few gentrified blocks in the downtown area in general it reminded me of my time in Flint, Michigan.

Just what are they going to do with that abandoned College Football Hall of Fame anyway?
