Your point about Catholicism failing to attract people of caliber, faith filled, intelligent, courageous to speak truth to power and dedicated to fill its leadership, clergy and teaching posts is spot on. Suspect the vast majority of the Notre Dame faculty is predictably agnostic. When was the last time anyone associated with Notre Dame spoke against abortion or even condemned homosexual predatory behavior violating minors. Also if you listen to most Bishops and Cardinals carefully, it becomes very apparent that these men reached their positions not so much for their holiness or dedication to the Church but rather for their political and social skills.

I am in Pittsburgh. I know many people who grew up with and were personal friends of Archbishop Wuerl. You are SOOOOOOOO spot-on with that observation!
The more diplomatic ones refer to him as "a political animal" and the more blunt-spoken call him "a butt-kisser".
