Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

2 Chronicles 5

5 When all the work Solomon had done for the temple of the Lord was finished, he brought in the things his father David had dedicated—the silver and gold and all the furnishings—and he placed them in the treasuries of God’s temple.

The Ark Brought to the Temple

2 Then Solomon summoned to Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Zion, the City of David. 3 And all the Israelites came together to the king at the time of the festival in the seventh month.

4 When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the Levites took up the ark, 5 and they brought up the ark and the tent of meeting and all the sacred furnishings in it. The Levitical priests carried them up; 6 and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.

7 The priests then brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. 8 The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and covered the ark and its carrying poles. 9 These poles were so long that their ends, extending from the ark, could be seen from in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are still there today. 10 There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

11 The priests then withdrew from the Holy Place. All the priests who were there had consecrated themselves, regardless of their divisions. 12 All the Levites who were musicians—Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun and their sons and relatives—stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen and playing cymbals, harps and lyres. They were accompanied by 120 priests sounding trumpets. 13 The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang:

“He is good;

    his love endures forever.”

Then the temple of the Lord was filled with the cloud, 14 and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God.

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

We have returned to the Narrative that describes Music in the Bible. In this Passage, Solomon has completed the Temple construction, and there only remains one thing, to bring the Ark of the Covenant into the Holy of Holies. Without the Presence of God, the Temple is just a building.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The sanctuary of the little church held about 1000 people, and it was always full. There were hymnals, but most people knew the songs by heart. The whole first part of the service was singing, and it was a combination of Old-Time-Gospel, Traditional Hymns, and lots of Choruses, accompanied by piano, organ, drums, guitars, and the occasional wind instrument. There was no official choir, because everybody sang. To my newly-blessed ears, it really sounded like angels singing in heaven.

Skip, a friend of mine, who had introduced me to this lovely little church, had a problem though. When the music was at its loveliest, there was a woman's voice somewhere behind him that was horribly out of pitch. The woman sounded sincere, but her voice was awful. Nobody except Skip seemed to notice or mind it, so he said nothing. The following Sunday, Skip sat himself in the very opposite section of the offending singer.

But! There it was again, right behind him. He dared not turn around to see who was singing so horribly, and resolved to change his seating next Sunday.

Next, he sat in the last row, right by the door, so nobody could sit behind him. The music started, and there it was again! The voice seemed to be coming from inside his own head.

Well, that was it! Skip left the church and did not seek out a new one. It seemed that he was harboring a secret sin and finally moved away to a place where he could be "himself". Anyway, that's what he said on his Facebook page as he showed a picture of himself waving a rainbow flag.

We never did find out who the horrible singer was, but I have a feeling she was not "human", if you catch my drift.

The enemy of our souls has many tactics to distract us from worship. He often uses music to do that because music is so powerful. The very notes and rhythms that lift us up into clouds of glory can also lead us into battle, comfort us in our grief, or plunge us into depression. The notes, rhythms, harmonies, and tempi are neutral, but the spirit behind the music is what stirs the soul for good or for evil.

I haven't seen or heard from Skip in about 25 years, but I still pray for him. May the music in his head be from God Alone, and bring him back to sanity.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

HUS all the work that Solomon made for the house of the LORD was finished: and Solomon brought in all the things that David his father had dedicated; and the silver, and the gold, and all the instruments, put he among the treasures of the house of God.
2 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion.

3 Wherefore all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto the king in the feast which was in the seventh month.

4 And all the elders of Israel came; and the Levites took up the ark.

5 And they brought up the ark, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, these did the priests and the Levites bring up.

6 Also king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him before the ark, sacrificed sheep and oxen, which could not be told nor numbered for multitude.

7 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims:

8 For the cherubims spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above.

9 And they drew out the staves of the ark, that the ends of the staves were seen from the ark before the oracle; but they were not seen without. And there it is unto this day.

10 There was nothing in the ark save the two tables which Moses put therein at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt.

11 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place: (for all the priests that were present were sanctified, and did not then wait by course:

12 Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:)

13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;

14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

I would never have shared the story if Skip hadn’t posted his “preference” on FB. FR is a much smaller audience, and the readers of this thread smaller still.

And I agree with you. The awfulness of the voice may not have even existed outside of Skip’s consciousness. The distortion could have been in the processing of the voice rather than in the hearing of it.

Especially when there was nobody sitting behind him.

One of my most cherished songs lately is Rescue Story by Zach Williams. I love this stanza, I pray it over my son every day, I’ll pray it over this fella, and I pray it over and over in my own life. Thank you Jesus. Here is the section of the song:

You were writing the pages
Before I had a name
Before I needed grace, oh
You sing a song of redemption
‘Cause every time I ran away
You were louder than my shame
And now where would I be without You?
Where would I be, Jesus?
You were the voice in the desert
Calling me out in the dead of night
Fighting my battles for me
You are my rescue story
Lifted me up from the ashes
Carried my soul from death to life
Bringing me from glory to glory
You are my rescue story (story)
