Catholic bishops in Turkey pledged not to contest plans to turn Istanbuls ancient Hagia Sophia cathedral that now serves as a museum into a Muslim place of worship.
In announcing their decision June 18, the bishops backed government claims that the monuments future is a question of national sovereignty.
We are a church deprived of juridical status, so we cannot give any advice on this countrys internal questions, the Turkish bishops conference said in a statement sent to Catholic News Service.
Although we would wish Hagia Sophia to retain its character as a museum, it isnt for us to intervene or even give our opinion on a decision which solely concerns the Republic of Turkey, the bishops said.
The statement came amid international protests against Turkish government calls for the 6th-century landmark to be converted into a mosque. A plan for the conversion was expected to be approved by Turkeys highest court July 2.
The bishops said Hagia Sophia, which St. Paul VI, St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have visited, originated as a church in communion with Rome, but became Orthodox after the 1054 schism between eastern and western churches. It later served for nearly five centuries as a mosque following the Ottoman capture of Constantinople, todays Istanbul, in 1453.
However, the Orthodox church in neighboring Greece rejected the planned conversion, describing Hagia Sophia as a masterpiece of architectural genius, globally renowned as one of the preeminent monuments of Christian civilization.
Any change will provoke strong protest and frustration among Christians worldwide, as well as harming Turkey itself, the churchs governing synod said June 12.
The cathedral, founded by Emperor Justinian I on the site of two earlier churches, was the worlds largest at its dedication in 537. It became a museum in 1935 under modern Turkeys founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
In May, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed he hoped to annul Ataturks decree and reopen the monument to Muslim worship. Abdulahmit Gul, Turkeys justice minister, told the Anadolu news agency June 15 that the move was a matter of sovereignty and reflected the common wish of all citizens.
Critics of the move have accused Erdogans government of using the planned conversion to boost support for his governing Justice and Development party amid economic hardships exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Russias Orthodox Church also called on Turkey to maintain open access to everyone, and warned June 8 a change in Hagia Sophias status would violate fragile inter-confessional balances.
Christian minorities have long complained of discrimination in Turkey and have faced problems recruiting clergy, establishing associations and obtaining building permits.
During a November 2014 visit to Turkey, Pope Francis urged greater tolerance for the Catholic Church. The church continues efforts to reclaim about 200 confiscated properties.
In a June 13 tweet, Archbishop Sahak Masalyan, Armenian Orthodox patriarch of Istanbul, proposed permitting both Muslims and Christians to pray in Hagia Sophia, which attracted 3.3 million visitors annually before the pandemic. He said the two faiths could not afford the luxury of a new cross and crescent dispute.
UNESCO, which declared Hagia Sophia a World Heritage site in 1985, confirmed that a change in the monuments use would require international consultation.
Ping
You are turning the other cheek right into irrelevance.
Is anyone surprised. Under Jorge Bergoglio, Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops throughout the world have come out of hiding, and the vast majority have shown themselves to be gutless wonders who are anything but Roman Catholic. Close your wallets and purses to these faux Catholics.

No it doesn't. The Turks can do whatever they want, and there isn't a damn thing UNESCO can do to even slow it down.
Let’s not be too hard on Christians in Turkey. They are a whittled down hated minority & Erdogan can sic the Muslim mobs on them in an instant to burn their remaining churches and kill as many as possible.
The Turkish bishops’ statement can be read between the lines: “We’re hostages in our own country and there’s nothing we can do about it, except try not to bring Erdogan’s wrath down on us.”
Ritual humiliation, hallmarks of The Left and Islam.
Of course not. Christians like to turn their limitless supply of other cheeks and Muslims like to slap them.

Why now, its been the way it is for maybe 100 years, not a church, not a mosque. That was a good compromise.
Didn’t Turkey slaughter brutally 2 million Christians not too long ago?
Exactly. A statement clearly made under duress should not be taken at face value.
Hey wait a minute, isn’t Hagia Sophia an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral? The Roman Catholics have no business giving the Turks permission!
Marvin: Man, I don't even have an opinion.
The result, if you recall, was his brains splattered all over the place.
Hagia Sophia is a Catholic Church; may it return to its former status.
I guess we know which side these “bishops” are on. Did they collect their 30 pieces of silver or did they do it for free?
Did they get 30 pieces of silver in return for their endorsement?
Spooky that we posted almost the exact same thing at almost the exact same time.
