I must be in the twilight zone or drunk. Or both
The Russians are speaking up for America more than the Republican Party is.
Its damned disorienting now that the Russians are right, even only from time to time, like this. And a few other times in the recent past.
This iconoclasm (literally, the breaking of icons) is damned annoying, too, because I would like to think that Americans are better than this.
But these jokers, geez, they give iconoclasm a bad name.
The title is misleading. “Statues to American Slave Holders” makes it sound like the statues of these men were built to honor them as slaveholders. George Washington’s primary characteristic is not that he was a slaveholder, but that he led our army to independence from Great Britain. To consider him primarily as a slaveholder above all else when almost all men of wealth and standing in Virginia in that historical epoch also had slaves (i.e. it was simply the norm) is nonsensical and unfair.
The reason to topple his statue wasn’t because he was one of the large number of important historical figures throughout the world such as Muhammad who owned slaves, but because the people doing it resent his role in creating the United States (a country most of them hate and want to see toppled itself).
