The takeaway point in all this below is that the God of the Bible was totally justified in giving His command to Israel to totally destroy the Canaanites.

The Canaanites Were Not Salvageable --- They Had Sunk To The Very Bottom On The Immorality Scale:
{A} Cold Blooded Murder.
{B} Incest With Close Family Members.
{C} Murdered Their Own Children {Molech}.
{D} Blood-Lust Gory Murder Religious Ceremonies.
{E} Sex With Animals.
God's purpose was to get rid of all that up there and replace it with the religion of the nation of Israel which prohibited all such vile sins.
"The Lord said to Moses, speak to the Israelites and say to them, You must not do as they do in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you.
Do not follow their practices." Leviticus 18:1-3
"Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways {listed in Leviticus 18:6-23} because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled."
"For all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you" Leviticus 18:27

So what were they doing that was so bad?
Here is the list of the sins of the Canaanites:
(1) They were having sex with their close family members. Leviticus 18:6
(2) They were having sex with their mothers. Leviticus 18:7
(3) They were having sex with their sisters. Leviticus 18:9
(4) They were having sex with their grandchildren. Leviticus 18:10
(5) They were having sex with their aunts. Leviticus 18:14
(6) They were having sex with their daughters-in law. Leviticus 18:15
(7) They were having sex with their brother's wife. Leviticus 18:16
( 8 ] They were having sex with their neighbor's wife.. Leviticus 18:20
(9) They were having homosexual sex. Leviticus 18:22
(10) They were giving their children to be murdered in sacrifice to Molech. Leviticus 18:21
Now The Canaanites Had Sunk To Bestiality.
(11) The Canaanites were having sex with animals. Leviticus 18:23
(12) Their women were specifically mentioned as having sex with animals. Leviticus 18:23
There was a total of 6 tribes that were practicing (1) through (12) up there:
Hittites Amorites Canaanites Perizzites Hivites Jebusites All 6 tribes are generally referred to as the "Canaanites." Deuteronomy 20:16-18
The command of God to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 20:16 "do not leave alive anything that breathes" was applicable only to these 6 tribes that were practicing (1) through (12) listed up-post.
All the other many tribes and cities that were living at a distance from the Canaanites were to be offered an opportunity to make peace
with the Israelites and were never the object of total annihilation as was the 6 totally corrupt Canaanite nations.
See Deuteronomy 20:11 and Deuteronomy 20:15 on the offer of peace to be made to the nations living at a distance from the Canaanites.
The reason for the offer of peace was that these nations living at a distance from the Canaanites were morally salvageable and they were accordingly shown mercy if they would agree to make peace with the Israelites.

CONCLUSION: The God of the Bible was totally justified in giving His command to the nation of Israel to totally destroy the Canaanite tribes

And yet, God gave them a 400 year reprieve while Israel was in Egypt.
During which time they only grew worse. When God did give the land over to Israel, he told Israel not to think it was because of their own righteousness.
The ancient Sifra commentary on Lev. 18:3 specifically says the Egyptians and Canaanites had same sex marriage contracts.
Who are the Canaanites today?

What is presumably Canaanite DNA lives on in ME Arab and Jewish populations.
BTW, the term Canaanite in the Bible sometimes is a generic term for ‘trader’.
That list is so hard to read. I often wondered at Sodom and Gomorrah and the sin of men with men, this is so much worse... America is so underserved of any of Gods blessings. I am looking forward to a new dictator whose name is Jesus. He will rule with truth and justice. All will be required to bend the knees to Him. It will truly be a time of peace during the earthly millennium then eternity is before us who have heard His voice and follow Him.
What bothers many many readers of the Old Testament is why God, after commanding Israel not to murder, uses their nation as an instrument of genocide to punish.
Why not just destroy the Canaanites the same way He destroyed Sodom and Gomorah and not involve people killing other men, women and children?
From my memory, I think the following reasons can be gleaned from scripture: (1) to test his people's love for Him via testing their trust and obedience to him and (2) to glorify His name such that the other nations would fear the God of Israel
Go back and read the article again. The Canaanites were clearly early, early members of the Democrat Party.
Several months ago a FReeper made a comment about Michael Heiser and the Genesis 6 conspiracy. I wasn't familiar with either, but I was curious, so I started doing a little research and it all ties into this thread pretty neatly.
"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them." Genesis 6:4
Some believe the Nephilim were directly responsible for the earth being so corrupt that God ultimately sent the Flood, destroying all life, except for Noah with his wife, his three sons and their wives, and the animals on the ark. And yet, the Israelites encountered the descendants of the Nephilim, among the Canaanites, when they entered the promised land much later on. How did the Nephilim survive the Flood?

The Bible says Noah, was righteous and blameless, but Genesis 6:12 says "all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth." It seems reasonable that if all flesh was corrupt, except for Noah, then someone else on the ark must have been the source for the post-Flood appearance of the Nephilim.
Shortly after the flood, Noah cursed his grandson, Canaan (it's a long story), the ancestor of the Canaanites. The Canaanites represented a continuation of the corrupt line that led to the Flood, so it makes perfect sense that God would want that very specific line destroyed, because permitting them to continue on would only result in the earth becoming utterly corrupt again.
The Canaanites didn't sink to the bottom on the immorality scale, they were at the bottom from their very beginning.
How did the Canaanites have any time or energy for farming or building?
