Um, nuns never taught Catholic school for free. They would get in-kind income in the form of room and board from the connected church that hosted the school and most likely a stipend for personal expenses paid for my donations from the parishoners.

What he means is nuns were not salaried employees. Obviously their basic needs, food, shelter, clothing, transportation, etc. were and are taken care of by their religious orders and/or the parishes where they are assigned. Many have taken the vow of poverty and live as mendicants.
