Father Aho will serve 25 months in prison for providing “help to a terrorist organisation”. The clergyman, absent from the courtroom, has always rejected the charges. The trial was held without journalists and public. Anti-Christian repression is growing as evinced by the Assyrian monk’s trial and the fate of Hagia Sophia.

Istanbul (AsiaNews) – A Turkish court sentenced Assyrian monk Sefer (Aho) Bileçen to two years and a month in prison after he was convicted of providing “help to a terrorist organisation”.

The clergyman found himself up on terrorism charges after he gave a piece of bread to two people who had turned up at the gates of his monastery; prosecutors told the Mardin High Criminal Court that the people in question were members of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK).

The clergyman, who was not present in the courtroom, has always protested his innocence, and rejected the charges.

Better known as “Father Aho”, the Assyrian monk is custodian of the old Syrian Orthodox monastery of Mor Yakup (St Jacob), which he restored. It was abandoned after the genocides of 1915.

He was arrested on 9 January 2020, but released four days later under pressure from public opinion. According to the indictment, the priest is guilty of “belonging to a terrorist organisation”, i.e. the PKK, which is outlawed in Turkey.

The priest was taken into custody on the basis of the secret testimony of a PKK defector who reported him to the Turkish authorities.

For his part, Father Aho has always insisted that he did not know that the people who came to ask him for food, that he did not know that they were “members of the PKK”, and that he helped them out of “Christian charity”.

In today’s proceedings, the court sentenced the monk to.............

Our “ally”. Guess this fits with not lifting a finger when ISIS was blowing up churches and mass murdering Christians, but then swinging into action to attack anyone pressing ISIS hard.

This reminds me of something out of Nikolai Gogol or Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Ever seen a Turkish-Kurdish riot? I have. In Austria. Erdogan was speaking to Turks and the Kurds counter-protested. One Kurd was stabbed and these enormous Austrian policemen came out of unmarked vans and opened a can on the perp.

I guess the Turks killed two birds with one stone here. Take out a Christian to warn everyone not to give anything to a Kurd, even a starving one.

Turks have gone full low life since the ISIS era. They loved buying cheap stolen ISIS oil.

If Russia killed Erdoğan, it would have done more for the free world than anything Ukraine could possibly do.

People need to understand, that every Muslim throughout Europe will be loyal to Erdogan if he makes his move on Europe. That makes him much more dangerous than Putin could ever be.

I spent a week in Turkey before Erdogan ....Istanbul was delightful, very westernized. We hardly ever saw a veiled woman there. People were thrilled to see Americans. It was almost Christmas and there were more Christmas decorations up than there were in my uberliberal town near Seattle.

Erdogan is the devil incarnate.
