Are there biblically prophetic implications to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—could it trigger War of Gog & Magog found in Ezekiel 38-39?

The decision by Russian President Vladimir Putin to launch an illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine has dominated global headlines and social media for the last week.

It has also generated a wave of questions about Bible prophecy and the End of Days.

I’m receiving questions from Christian pastors and lay people — and from Jewish rabbis and scholars, as well as journalists — all over the world. While there are many variations, they generally fall into two main categories.

First, are there biblically prophetic implications to this horrible new war in Ukraine and fears throughout Europe that Putin may invade other countries as well?

Second, could this war in Europe trigger the End Times scenario that the Hebrew prophet Ezekiel described as the “War of Gog & Magog” in chapters 38 and 39 of the Book of Ezekiel?

(snip)

Old and New Testament prophecies that describe future events, particularly events that will occur in what the Bible describes as “the last days,” remain a mystery to many.

Unfortunately, very few pastors or Bible teachers have ever carefully studied these prophecies, much less take the time to explain them to lay people.

Indeed, most pastors tend to ignore End Times prophecies altogether.

So up to 40 percent of Bibliical prophecies are spiritual and all of God original promises have been transferred to your church

The Russian Army can’t even take a major city sitting on their doorstep from an under-armed and largely unsophisticated Ukraine, many of its troops are in open rebellion…and they’re supposed to send an army over 2,000 miles away to defeat the highly sophisticated and well-armed IDF? Yeah, BS - not in this century.

No man knows the Day of the Lord. Stop trying to forecast it, it isn’t possible.

A very well-written essay that blows away the "Rosh = Russia" theory:

Good essay. I doubt it will sway anyone who's heard only "Russia Russia Russia" since birth, but it certainly bears reading and, at the least, consideration.

Putin is weak because outside of Russia he would have little support, he’s a Pariah.

The real threat is going to be a person with wide support across the globe, and I believe Erdogan will have the support of must Muslims.

Bible teachers have studied this plenty. But there’s not enough info to make a clear conclusion who and when.

Contrary to what some have argued, “Rosh” in Ezekiel 38:2 does indeed refer to Russia. There are specific reasons why this is the correct interpretation.

If you read the essay I linked above, you'll see the problem with "Rosh == Russia". "Rosh" is just the Hebrew word for "head," cf "Rosh Hashanah" = "head of the year". In fact, the KJV doesn't think "Rosh" is a proper name, but translates that verse as "chief prince of Mesech and Tubal".

Also, although it long postdates the Bible, Hebrew has a perfectly good word for "Rus/Russia", which isn't "Rosh".

To understand why, in Ezekiel 38:2, “Rosh” should be correctly interpreted as a proper noun referring to Russia, rather than just as “head,” please see:

As was also posted above, Dr. Andy Woods dealt with this subject in a recent class. A transcript hasn’t been posted yet, but here’s the audio:

“Realize, the prophesies of the Bible were written to them in their age. It had to make sense to them, or they don’t make sense at all.”

That’s not true at all. Several of the prophecies of Daniel could not have been understood until the advent of the Persian, Greek and Roman empires. Further, Peter in his first epistle tells us that some prophecies are written for the benefit of future generations. While I am not a dispensationalist I am not a preterm student either. There are many eschatological prophecies that have to be fulfilled.

There’s something seriously wrong with all the folks who seem to be morbidly delighted and obsessed with the thought that we are going to have to endure the Tribulation.

The vehement hatred of those who take Scripture for what is says, that the church is NOT destined for the judgment of the time of the Tribulation, is very telling about where they stand spiritually.

There’s a world of difference between experiencing troubles and tribulations and even persecution of believers simply for the fact that they follow Christ and God’s judgment on the world and His dealing with Israel at that time to bring them to Himself.

Deliberately conflating troubles and tribulations with the Great Tribulation, is disingenuous at best.

But hey, I’m sure that if you really want to go through the Great Tribulation, God would be willing to accommodate you. As excited as you are about the thought of people having to go through it, I sure hope you enjoy yourself.

It’s just sad to see people trying to read the tea leaves and try to fit it into current-day events

It’s pretty sad that someone would consider Bible prophecy as equivalent to reading tea leaves. I’m sure God would prefer that you thought higher about His divinely inspired word than that.

I wonder how many of the end times nay sayers would have been when Jesus came the first time.

Nah, He’s not the Messiah. They are just forcing events to fit together to apply to this carpenter’s son. They’re reading too much into Scripture. This guy doesn’t look like we expected so it can’t be HIM.

You make an excellent observation.

All of those religious zealots from all walks of life knew they were living in Messianic Times during Jesus’s life. He walked among them and they didn’t like what they saw. Isaiah 53 was there for them to read, and He fulfilled so much more. But still, disbelief reigned and they murdered Him.

It would not surprise me to see a vast majority of Christians, especially the creeps who believe The Chruch replaces Israel, be shunned by Him when the Rapture does happen. These people are no different than the “gay christians” who believe love is love and God is love and tolerant of all lifestyles.

They make a mockery of Jesus and God by boxing Him in and creating their own fake Jesus.

“I never knew you”, sounds like a valid response perhaps.

“But the Pre Trib Rapture folks think they are so special”

Guess what dude?

We ARE SPECIAL!

Revelation 3:10
Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.

>>>>There’s something seriously wrong with all the folks who seem to be morbidly delighted and obsessed with the thought that we are going to have to endure the Tribulation.>>>

There is something seriously wrong with folks who think they are so special to God, they won’t go through a time of trouble. Martyrs lost their heads, burned alive, Prophets sawed in half, John the Baptist beheaded, Christians burned alive today in Muslim countries......and leave it to soft delicate American Evangelicals to think they are so special...they are getting off scott free.

New Covenant theology/dispensationalism/Pre Trib Rapture wasn’t taught be a single Protestant Reformer. It is rooted in a Darby Scofield Bible that needs to say we are under grace so the Ten Commandments are void. Except it’s not the Ten Commandments they have a problem with...it’s just the Sabbath.

So they invent a “new covenant” of grace to do away with the Sabbath, and the “law” except when it comes to abortion and things like homosexuality.....suddenly God has laws again.

It’s repugnant, their hypocrisy. Their weak amateurish theology says......God still has a literal nation....Israel! When Jesus said the Kingdom of God was taken from this nation and given to a nation that will bear fruit......Spiritual Israel.

These New Covenant folks will be exposed soon...as they unite with Rome and her day....Sunday, .....which is when the real fireworks start. And they don’t even realize not only are they in the time of trouble.....they will calling for the persecution and even death of those who don’t go alone with Rome and her daughters to keep Sunday holy.....Babylon and her daughters...Protestants reaching out to Rome again even though She hasn’t changed a single doctrine.

How nauseating to think you are so special....God lets you off the hook when he didn’t even let John the Baptist off the hook.

Pretrib rapture......for soft weak, marshmallow evangelicals..who are in for a big surprise.
