Check in with them again in 20 years.
People who once espoused being a Christian but backslid into another life style have a verse specifically dedicated to them. "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Prov. 22:6.)
So many people come back when they are older, deep in regret for walking away when they were younger. The most famous is the comedian Sam Kinison and his death.
Comedian Sam Kinison who died in a head-on collision in 1992 said to no one in particular: “I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die.” But then there was a pause as if Kinison were listening to someone. Then he asked, “But why?” and after another pause “Okay, Okay, Okay.” A friend who was with him said, “Whatever voice was talking to him gave him the right answer and he just relaxed with it.”

That's true. And it's why we should spare no effort when it comes to proper upbringing of children. That said, It takes divine intervention for that to happen, oftentimes, as in the case of Sam Kinison as you mentioned. The sister-in-law I mentioned above was into some bad stuff when she was out on her own. We don't even know what. But whatever it was, she has trouble even hearing the name of Jesus said and remaining in the room.
