The congregants of an Orange County church are being hailed as heroes after they managed to hogtie a gunman who went on a shooting spree on Sunday afternoon in what authorities are describing as an act of 'exceptional heroism and bravery.'
One person was killed and five others were shot at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California, about 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
Six people at the house of worship were struck by gunfire after the shooter, said to be an Asian male in his 60s, opened fire at around 1:25 p.m. That man is now in police custody.
About 40 parishioners witnessed the violence - but those who were present also helped to prevent further bloodshed by overpowering the shooter and tying him up.
The group reportedly confiscated his weapons and restrained him until police arrived on the scene.
Police say those involved 'showed exceptional heroism and bravery in detaining the suspect.'
'That group of churchgoers displayed what we believe is exceptional heroism and bravery in intervening to stop the suspect. They undoubtedly prevented additional injuries and fatalities,' Orange County Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said. 'I think it's safe to say that had people not intervened, it could have been much worse.'
Two handguns were found on the shooter and were quickly removed.
It's not clear exactly how the parishioners were able to subdue the man, but as soon as they had him on the ground, they tied his arms and legs with electrical or extension cords, Hallock explained.
One person suffered fatal wounds and died at the scene at the church. Four of the other victims were critically wounded - while a fifth suffered minor injuries.

Oriental is what is used when they mean from any of the Asian countries.

Notice that Biden makes no mention of this shooting but comments on what is called a racist shooting in NY. He can’t use the racist talk when referring to Christians being attacked so he’s silent.

Where do they teach people to write such stupid statements? On other level, at one time Orange County was a conservative stronghold. I had relatives there. Back in the early Nixon era.
I want to know why in that entire congregation no one was able to shoot back?
A firearm would be much more effective than electrical cords.
In our 200 person congregation in Oregon, we have designated armed security and at least 20 concealed handguns.
The last church shooter in Texas was killed in his tracks, which discourages others.

It could have been a Mohammedan or it could have been a disgrutled ex-church member.
I am a bass player, and often have a good view of what is going on, however mt and I were asked not to carry at the last Church we attended, so I haven't been back.
When you read the article, it sounds like Oriental congregants took down the Asian perp. How special is that?
The Californians are characterizing him as Asian. When white Americans say Asian, they mean Oriental.
If the police mean Chinese when they said Asian, he could be a CCP "uncle" originally brainwashed during the cultural revolution. By his age, that would be very likely. With the increasingly harsh rhetoric coming out of Beijing these days, he could've thought he was doing his patriotic duty by punishing some rebels.
This article from NBC uses “Asian” as well - this is pretty clearly using the American common usage of the term
I’m sad that the perp killed a Christian, but I am glad the Christians fought back and stopped him. We’ve got to learn that Jesus’ “turn the other cheek” saying does not proscribe Christians from using force to protect innocent life.
