Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 10:28

Which is no one in earth, heaven, or hell.

In Christian theology, turning away from God results at death in the eternal captivity, subjugation, and torment of the soul in Hell, which in Christian terms is said to perish due to loss of its humanity in being permanently sundered from God. A special category seems to exist of souls taken by demonic forces but then rescued by angelic and Divine intervention. I have read of a near death experience in which an atheist who died and was bound for Hell was rescued by angels because he prayed and called out to Christ. Returned to life, he left his college professorship and became a fundamentalist minister.

>> Which is no one in earth, heaven, or hell. <<

So Jesus wrote “Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell” just to mess with people’s minds? I don’t think so.

The devil can be defeated, if you wear the armor of righteousness, etc (below). But his greatest triumph is making people believe he doesn’t exist, or is no threat.

1 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live

I wouldn't underestimate Jesus' power to forgive sins.

And so there is a notion that when humanity’s mortal existence comes to an end, Christ and His angels will shatter the gates of Hell in order to offer forgiveness and rescue to the human souls in torment.

That notion is not to be found in the Bible.

The gates of Hell have already been shattered. And yet many souls still reject Christ.

No. The most that can be said along those lines is that Christ went to Hell but did not remain there. As Acts 2:31 states, "He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in Hell, neither his flesh did see corruption." Thus the Roman Catholic Apostle's Creed declares that Christ was "crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven . . ."

The idea that Christ will in time forgive the souls in Hell and then return to rescue them is more a measure of our modern age's desire for everyone to be saved, eventually, by some contrivance. One might hope for that to be so, but the Bible does not support that view.

The term “gates of Hell” is essentially a metaphor for the point that Hell is a place of eternal captivity for the human souls there. To say that the gates have been shattered implies that captivity in Hell is not eternal.

Wishful thinking.

Something Jesus said about torment forever, that proves you wrong.

I agree. I was simply pointing out a belief (or hope) in some quarters that Hell is not permanent.
