Cdl. Cupich reinstates Sunday Mass obligation in Chicago more than a year after other dioceses

CHICAGO (LifeSiteNews) – The Archdiocese of Chicago has announced through an internal email that the faithful will soon be obliged to attend Sunday masses again under pain of mortal sin.

The email was sent to every priest of the Archdiocese by Vicar General Bishop Robert Casey. Casey stated that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, which was lifted with a general dispensation for all the faithful in the opening stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, would be reinstated as of the First Sunday of Advent later this month.

“Dear Brothers, Cardinal [Blase] Cupich is lifting the general dispensation from the obligation to participate in Sunday Mass that was put into effect at the beginning of the pandemic,” Casey wrote.

“As we begin a new Church year on the First Sunday of Advent, November 26-27, this is a moment to renew our invitation to those parishioners who are physically able to return to Mass in person, as well as renew our life in Christ as a community of believers.”

Casey also stated that, rather than recite the Nicene Creed, parish priests would renew their baptismal vows with their congregations after the homily, “acknowledging that we owe our obligation to participate in Sunday Mass to God but also to each other.”

“Be assured of my prayers for all of you and your parishes as we continue to invite people to full, active, conscious, and in-person participation at Mass and in the life of our local Church,” Casey wrote.

The Archdiocese announced in April, as COVID-inspired restrictions were lifted, that it was safe to return to Mass. However, it has chosen to delay the reinstitution of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass almost a year and a half after other dioceses.

In Los Angeles, the largest diocese in the United States, the dispensation to attend Sunday Mass was lifted in June last year. Other dioceses to reinstate the obligation to attend Sunday worship last year included Tucson, Arizona; Wichita, Kansas; Lansing, Michigan; Des Moines, Iowa; and Santa Rosa, California.

The Archdiocese of Chicago, led by controversial Cardinal Blaise Cupich, is known to be a hotbed of heresy and liturgical abuse.

Earlier this year, Cupich rebuked cancer patient Fr. Anthony Buś for asking for permission to continue saying the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). The cardinal accused the priest of violating Canon 1373 of the Code of Canon Law, which deals with disobedience by subordinates towards the Pope or the local ordinary.

In August, Cupich banned the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest from saying public Masses and hearing confessions. While the Archdiocese said that the Institute “chose” to stop offering the sacraments to the faithful, those close to the Institute told LifeSiteNews that members of the Institute could not sign in good conscience a document presented them by the cardinal. Signing the paper would have, among other things, given them permission to offer the TLM for two years. However, the permissions could have been rescinded at any time and the document demanded that the Institute reject the TLM in favor of the Novus Ordo Missae by agreeing that the latter is the only true expression of the Roman Rite.

The Archdiocese of Chicago has not responded to LifeSiteNews’ request for comment.

Frankencardinal Cupich was one of the first to totally shut-down the TLM and one of the last to reinstate the Sunday obligation.

There is always a Sunday mass obligation.

What?

If you can’t go because you are sick you get it on line

Back in the day there was mass on tv

And on radio

There are Eucharistic ministers

During a pandemic you can’t go be in the same room with people for an hour

Last time I went to mass the priest talked for 40 minutes about nothing and we could not understand him

The congregation were the primary ‘I’m gonna get a vax and spread it around pretending I’m immune’ crowd

No

There’s always mass on line every week.

translation: Cardinal Cupcake’s coffers are running low. Gotta get that collection plate revenue juiced. It’s Chicago- you are either in on the scam or too stupid to realize you are being scammed.

You are obliged to a Mass in person, not online, if you don’t a legitimate medical or age related reason.

You are not excused because you can’t handle 40 minute sermons.

No that is not what I meant. At all

In a pandemic the priest is blabbing in an inaudible for volume and I’m unintelligible for accent 40 minutes I had nothing to do nor did anyone for 40 time wasting minutes. The nuns used to say idleness is the devils playground. I said 3 rosaries

3

I used my time like a retreat.
The issue is this. I cannot get Covid and haven’t to this point. I cannot be in a room with strangers for an hour and a half

They are vaccinated and won’t face the fact that it is the vaccinated who get sick are the ones spreading Covid.

Many people can’t get Covid for life threatening reasons in one

The priest in this pandemic needs to have mass that is like daily mass 30 minutes. Two readings, psalm, gospel, the rite prayers, consecration and communion. Prayer after communion -post communion should be ten minutes.

Otherwise people who want very much to get to mass can’t go.

People who believe worthless masks (that even the flu passes through) can save them and being out in public might as well off themselves at this point - they are ridiculous. The tiny minority that are immunocompromised already know what to do.

You could have prayed all three mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

I work in a hospital in an urban hospital where we handle most of the Covid cases and all of the serious cases for the past two years.

I and everyone around me uses a mask. I have used gloves, face shields frequent hand washing and I have not contracted it nor brought it home to my family. The mask has worked for me. Still does.

N 95 in heavy concentrated areas

I have definitely turned down wedding invitations and have not got on an airplane though my family has and they avoid baggage carousel and wear their masks Uber to Uber. I know nurses that wear N95s for 12 hours yes you can do so for a plane ride - recirculated air is the worst second to the heavy concentration of non caring people at the baggage carousel

No one in my family gmhas come home w Covid.

We have jobs, go to good schools, shop, have people over, socialize. I cant go to places where people are vaxed pretending they can’t spread it and sit with them for over an hour so I haven’t.

That is where Tge spread occurs

I get communion during the week with less crowded masses and I get Sunday mass on line.

If you bothered to read my post you’d see that that’s what I did

I can go through the rosary in 40 minutes 15 mysteries

That’s not what we’re supposed to do at mass

Well if you so afraid of Covid, you shouldn’t be going to grocery stores, department stores, movie theatres or ride public transportation if you refuse to go to Mass.

There’s always mass on line every week.

On-line Mass does not fulfill your Sunday obligation. If your local priest talks about nothing for 40 minutes, either find a different parish (or a different Mass at the same parish with a different priest), or offer up the 40 minute talk as a sacrifice, assuming he doesn't mess up the Consecration, too.

If you are infirm, you are likely excused from the Sunday obligation.

Yes. I’m sorry if I detracted from the obligation for Sunday Mass

It was what I opened with.

Actually, I should apologize. You are a long timer and have made it clear on numerous occasions that you are both a devout and educated Catholic. These are crazy times.

I hope didn’t mislead. Going to Mass every Sunday. Receiving communion is a tenet of Catholicism. It is a grave sin to not go to mass every sunday

IMPRESSIVE!

What’s your best time for a good Act of Contrition, three Hail Marys, and an Our Father ?

Attending Mass every Sunday is an obligation. I would never want to deter from that nor advise or lead anyone to deter from it

I was presenting a situation and I should have just shut up about it

Confession- frequent.

Probably less time then it takes for your daily worship of Lucifer.
