The protocols after the death of a reigning pope have in the past provided a well-known set of rituals, but the death of a pope emeritus presents a unique situation.

VATICAN CITY — Just two official state delegations — from Italy and Germany — will attend the funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the Vatican’s press office has confirmed, answering one of the many novel protocol questions posed by the death of a former pope.

The German-born Benedict, formerly Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, lived in Italy for more than 40 years, beginning in 1981. The Holy See Press Office confirmed on Dec. 31 that the two countries were sending official representatives to the funeral, which will be on Thursday.

Both Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Italian Prime Minister Geogia Meloni paid their respects to the late pontiff Monday morning at St. Peter’s Basilica, where his body will lie in state through Jan. 4. While there, Meloni offered her condolences to Benedict’s longtime personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein.

According to the news magazine Der Spiegel, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will attend Benedict’s funeral on Thursday in an official capacity.

The protocols after the death of a reigning pope have in the past provided a well-known set of rituals, but the death of a pope emeritus presents a unique situation. Speculation about whether he would be buried in papal dress or that of a cardinal has been accompanied by other questions surrounding who will attend the funeral in an official capacity since Benedict XVI is no longer a head of state.

The answer appears to be a mixture of papal rites. Buried in the papal red, his body was adorned with many features reserved for a pope, but not all: the characteristic red shoes worn by Benedict as pope were replaced by black.......

I don’t know why he stepped down.
I don’t know how Francis got elevated.
I think it’s odd that Benedict’s funeral isn’t being accorded dignitaries.

The whole situation at the Vatican seems weird to me. Meaning no disrespect to Catholicism. It just feels like the politics of the head office has become bizarre.

Supposedly, the reason that his funeral was scheduled so quickly was to prevent states or even bishops from putting together delegations and getting there in time.

Francis is a petty, spiteful little man.

The Jesuits usurped the Vatican years before Francis took over.

They are now all on board with the Agenda 2030/WEF.

Was he the last Pope who was Catholic?

What would you expect? Just normal behavior for a Marxist.

Every country should send a minister, at least.

Certainly, every nominally Catholic country. I think a couple of generations ago, Spain, Ireland, and most of Latin America would have sent a representative.

What a huge missed opportunity for throngs of weary Catholics to gather publicly.

I love Benedict’s take on the simpletons’ desire for a New World Order:

“An oversimplification that does not take into account reality”

“Francis is a petty, spiteful little man.”

Indeed. Bergoglio is envious of Ratzinger’s holiness and popularity among the faithful.

To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, I tremble for Bergolio when I reflect that God is just.

I am a Catholic and I don't take offense. To me John Paul was one of , if not the best pope the church ever had.

The whole Vatican needs a house cleaning.

This Marxist clown occupying office now is an embarrassment.

I was hoping for a 1962 funeral rite as well! Stay tuned, sports fans...

It was interesting that shortly before Papa Benedict's passing, Pope Francis said that BXVI would be given the full funeral honors of a pope.

I'm sure this was Pope Benedict's request, prior to his death. Not Bergoglio's request.

It’s hard to say. I’m skeptical of the idea of Bergoglio honoring B16’s wishes in any manner. It may just be a situation of Bergoglio wanting to downplay the funeral due to his jealousy of B16. Keeping a U.S. president and other world leaders away may be part of that.

Looks like you are right about Bergoglio not honoring his predecessor's requests/commands:

Gänswein: “I believe it broke Pope Benedict’s heart to read [Traditionis custodes].”

Francis is a petty, spiteful little man.

Whatever the reason for this quickly scheduled funeral Mass, Francis didn't even allow for the Novemdiales or nine day mourning period for a Pope.

Mea culpa! The Novemdiales begins the day of the funeral. We shall see if the Vatican observes this mourning period.
