The two are mutually exclusive.

Not necessarily- depends on why the person admired John Paul II. I know of some -like yourself no doubt, who admired John Paul II but detest the actions of Francis. I know others who liked John Paul II but like Francis even more.

Certainly, John Paul II was a "popular" pope, but give the state of Catholicism and what was going on at that time- being popular is not necessarily a credit.

Francis devotees may be trying to build a coalition with like-minded admirers of JPII to withstand headwinds that they believe will mount/grow now that BXVI has died.

Although I suspect they exist, I don’t know anyone who admired John Paul but has greater admiration for Francis. The time of the mystics is here; priest v. Priest, Bishop v. Bishop and Pope v. Pope. I pray this chastisement ends or is mitigated
