But this would not have been possible without a new pastoral “style” making such a state of affairs possible. The origin of this pontifical style, which almost always turns a blind eye to heresy and dissent, can be found in the word with which Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council on October 11, 1962:

“The Church has always opposed these errors. Frequently she has condemned them with the greatest severity. Nowadays, however, the Spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity. She considers that she meets the needs of the present day by demonstrating the validity of her teaching rather than by condemnations.”[5]

It was allowed to prevail because some feared that a direct confrontation with dissent would create a schism in the Church, a fracture in the Church.”

Jesus came to divide.

The “second German reformation” is the polar opposite of the first. Luther wanted to bring the church back to the teachings of Scripture and the grace of God through Christ; he did not want to leave the church, but was kicked out by those who were unwilling to reason together (Isaiah 1:18). What is happening today in Germany is pure heresy, running away from the Scripture and the grace of God to a pagan love of the flesh and disdain of repentance of sin. Whatever one thinks of Luther, and I know the Catholics here think very little of him, one must admit his desire was to aim for Christ, which is not at all who the German Catholics, and all the rest who refuse to repent and believe the Gospel, are aiming for.
