The Names and Titles of God (Branch)

Isaiah 11:1-

11 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:

4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.

9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

After exhausting a list of Contractors and Handyman Companies, I was ready to throw my hands up in despair. Nobody wanted to work on Mobile Homes. Either the job was too small to bother with, or the fact that Mobile Homes use different measurements than "stick-built" houses. I called my brother, and he came right over and fixed the problem. Then he mused:

"You know, it would be a gold mine for someone with carpentry skills to learn everything there is to know about Mobile Homes. Then he could do all the jobs the other contractors refuse and he could make a nice living"

In a real, common-sense world, this would make perfect sense. But in a world closely governed by HOA Covenants, Licensing Bureaus, Building Codes, Unions, Rules and Regulations, Graft, Town Inspectors, Housing Authorities, and Bribery, a creative entrepreneur would be stymied at every turn. My brother sighed in agreement. Too bad. It was a very "American" point of view, if you lived in the 19th Century Wild West!

One town that I visited in 1984 could have really used a good carpenter. On a dusty hilltop in the Judean Wilderness is a town that seemed lost in time. Unemployed men sat under ragged awnings playing Backgammon and drinking tea. Women and children seemed to all be indoors, except for some street kids selling postcards and olive-wood camels. Perhaps it is in better shape these days, but the town forty years ago had an air of neglect. The bus waited as we all crowded into a church to see a fountain that was referred to as "Mary's Well". Then we all got back on the bus and left. We didn't eat lunch in the town or do any shopping, because there just weren't any places to do that at the time. Maybe things have changed by now, but, even in the time of Jesus, this little town was scorned. There was even an expression:

"Can Anything Good Come Out of Nazareth?"

(Well, my Beautiful Guitar came from Nazareth, Pennsylvania, but that's another story!)

From the looks of things, Nazareth, Israel hasn't had a good Carpenter/Handyman/Contractor/Stonemason for 2000 years. The last really GOOD one, Yeshua Bar Yusef, left town to become an Itinerant Preacher, and the World has never been the same since.

The name "Nazareth comes from today's Scripture. The root word, נֵצֶר (netser) STRONG'S #5342. This word means "a branch, a shoot, or a sprout". It appears four times in the Old Testament, Three in Isaiah and one in Daniel. In the Isaiah citations, the context indicates that The Branch is Messianic.

Then there is this prophecy from Jeremiah 23:5:

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up for David[a] a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land"

The word Jeremiah uses for "Branch" is צֶמַח (semach) STRONG'S 6780.

This word for "branch" is almost the same but has the added quality of sprouting or springing forth. Both words are nearly synonymous, but I like the one that the Home Town of Jesus was named after.

Did I ever mention to you that I don't believe in coincidences?
