Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
How Blessed,
How Glorious,
How Wonderful,
Is Your Most Holy Name!
How Mighty and Perfect is Your Word,
And Your Promise,
Which You have allowed us a glimpse into Your Perfect Will!

We had a few Partial Solar Eclipses when I was a kid. The schools sent home letters to our parents with severe instructions NOT to look directly at the Sun, or you would burn your eyes. They included instructions for making a pinhole camera out of a shoe-box so that we could see the Eclipse without looking directly at the sun. Another Eclipse is scheduled for April 8th and it will be total over a large swath of North America (including 7 towns named "Nineveh...Hmmmm). I am not in the Path of Totality, but we might get some effects here in the Boston Area. Remember, DON'T LOOK DIRECTLY AT IT!

I knew that "Rock of Ages"was an Old-Fashioned Christian Hymn, but I found out that it is also a traditional Hanukkah Song called "Maoz Tsur" which means "Rock of Ages" in Hebrew. Since both Jewish and Christian Traditions contain this Name for God, I assumed that it would be easy to find the Scripture associated with it.

It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. My search led me to these two hymns, Rock and Roll Venues, Video Games, Anime Characters, and other "rocks" that were filling my screen without giving me the Scripture for Today. It was in Isaiah (why am I not surprised?), and is translated as "Eternal Rock", "Everlasting Rock", and other synonyms, and that's why I couldn't find it. Once I had the Scripture reference, I was able to format the Thread.

The word for "Rock" in this context is צוּר (Tsur) STRONG'S 6697. The word doesn't mean just any old rock, stone, pebble, or or even a boulder. The meaning that is conveyed by this particular Rock is that of an enormous cliff, a massive, everlasting Rock of Strength and Endurance. Some translations render "tsur" as "Strength" or "Power". Both the Christian Hymn and the Hebrew Song emphasize the Safety of the Rock, the Power of the Rock, and the Shelter of the Rock.

The Christian Hymn sings of the Rock that was "cleft for me". This is a reference to the Old Testament Event in which Moses struck the Rock in the desert, and it brought forth Living Water. (Exodus 17). It also speaks of hiding in the cleft of the Rock. This refers to the time when Moses asked God to show Himself, but the Vision would be too much to bear. To protect Moses, God hides him in a cleft in the rock to protect him. (Exodus 33:22).Like the Sun, the Glory of God would be too much for Moses to bear.

Christian Theology carries this further. The "Cleft in the Rock" becomes the Wounds of Jesus, that He got on the Cross. Like Moses, we are unable to experience the Full Glory of God head-on, but, if we are hidden in the "Cleft of the Rock", that is, in the Everlasting Shelter of the Savior, we are safe.

On this Holy Saturday, that "in-between day" from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection, we can contemplate the Rock of Ages that will roll away the "stone" that covers the tomb of death.

The Hebrew Song Names the Rock in the second line. "Thy Saving Power" is transliterated "Yesh-ua-ti".

The Man we know as Jesus was actually named "Yeshua", which is the Hebrew word for Salvation.

You all know what I think about "coincidences".

Let The Rock of Ages roll away the stone.
