In honor of Veteran's Day....

I have never served and at 53 that is one of the things I regret not having tried in my life. I have had family members in WW1 and WW2, Vietnam, Korea and probably the Civil and Revolutionary wars. I am at least a 10th or 11th generation American.

Recently I met a man who was a survivor of the USS Morrison. He was about 92-93 years old. I can't remember his name but he lives about a mile from me. I could probably find him if I tried. As the ship was hit by 4 different planes and sunk he had to be pulled out of the water. He has 2 purple hearts.

He was really cool and I felt honored just to talk to him. He was very spry for his age.

To all of the Veterans out there I want to thank you for serving our nation. We can't even imagine what you men went through at such a young age.

What could I to support this person and others?

I’m your age, have a nearly identical heritage and share your sense of honor in meeting men like this. Meeting Veterans is one of the perks of my job. The last guy was an F4 pilot who got hit with a SAM over North Viet Nam. He managed to nurse it out to the South China Sea and ultimately get rescued. A lot of the Pacific sailors will talk about their experiences. One guy who was part of Merrill’s Marauders was a treat. But the few I’ve encountered who fought in the Ardennes wont talk about it, period. God bless them all.

This guy was great and he did not mind to talk about it. He was proud of it.

I didn’t mention he was using a mobility vehicle and he was still a daredevil with that.
