A cousin of my dad’s was in Germany from the Battle of the Bulge until the surrender, and he has an interview on-line by some college kid.
He said after the Bulge it was pretty much a done deal, IIRC. They would come across regular German soldiers and tell them to drop their weapons, and told them to start walking towards the US posts in the rear. They were more than happy to oblige. Drop their stuff in a pile, grab some rations from our troops and start walking. (I’m guessing the Soviets were in the other direction!)
I think he even mentioned how they took a young German soldier as a “prisoner”, but they used him as an interpreter and treated him well.
But the very last few days of the war, they had captured a bunch of SS troops. He said they demanded written terms of surrender, and each one of the had to be individually stripped of their gear, one by one. He said it took them two days!
In looking at his account and trying to find some history of it, the last shots of the war were after the war had officially ended. One of our planes fired some rounds on a group of SS troops. But then realized that they were captured troops!
I’ve always wondered if it was the same group that my relative was dealing with!?
