True. Robert Strange McNamara disliked military people and he was scared crapless of somehow getting the Chinese involved. China at this time was embroiled in the ‘Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution’ and was in no shape to do a lot of anything. RSM thought military people were stupid and beneath contempt. He spoke to as few as possible and was much more concerned with the ‘student power’ demonstrators at elite universities.
The leadership is about the same today. The higher they go the more they sound like real tools.

The way he did it was wrong though the motive was just. You don’t destroy evidence like that and not expect to have a bad consequence. He actually came out pretty well all things considered though what he went through should never have happened.
