US Submarine That Vanished on 1st Mission in WWII Is Found Off Alaskan Islands By Laura Geggel 22 days ago History

Nearly 80 years ago, the USS Grunion submarine sank on its inaugural mission during World War II, taking the lives of 70 sailors with it as it plunged to the bottom of the Pacific. Now, after years of searching, a team looking for WWII-era submarines has found the Grunion's bow about 2,700 feet (820 meters) under the water's surface, off the coast of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.

Upon finding the long-lost bow, the team used autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and advanced photogrammetry imaging to create 3D images of the underwater vessel.

"This goes so far past video or still imagery, it truly is the future of recording historical underwater discoveries," ocean explorer Tim Taylor, of the Lost 52 Project, a group searching for the 52 submarines that went missing during WWII, said in a statement.

Sunk by her own torpedo.

Fired four at a Japanese destroyer. One ran low, two bounced off without exploding. The fourth circled back and took of her periscope.

(According to Wikipedia)

The torpedoes we had early in the war were crap. Too many boats lost before the brass finally paid attention.

The US Navy had HUGE problems with dud torpedoes through mid 1943. Running depths were wrong and fuzes were faulty. Some historians say the Pacific war could have been won sooner if we didn't have so many dud torpedoes.

Edward Beach believed a number of US subs that went missing were victims of circle back torpedos.

The Japanese military had pretty crap military equipment.

One notable exception was thier “Long Lance” torpedoes.

I think the SAME problems occurred when badly made torpedoes were DROPPED by torpedo planes. They “fish” tended to break in half when contacting the water. Those that didn’t break up either were duds or ran way too deep.
Torpedoes were very costly, and a lack of money prevented the “testing to destruction” that would have exposed the faulty design/construction.

The USS Tang suffered the same sad fate.

There is a interactive display of the Tang at the WWII Museum in New Orleans.

Grunion runs in Coronado strand are akin to watching the Submarine races in New London CT or trapping Snipes anywhere there is/was a practical joker a huge tree a sack and a somewhat naive kid.

Such a ‘misspent yute’.....<; <: <:
