My poke at you was putting "Austin Powers" up there with Andy Griffith and the Danny Thomas Show as an example of warm and fuzzy pop culture!

Interesting how the author accuses Bush of being sort of a prisoner of his "wasp rich" background, like he is some kind of insulated snooty person then the author reveals his own elitism,,like watching Sex and the City and other such "highbrow" popular culture crap makes one better than the little guy, I think the writer is an effete snob,,BTW I watch Sex and the City,,it is no great tv show but is kind of entertaining, not high culture if you ask me. I detest anyone who attempts to define what is culturally right by his own standards. Especially a NYT writer, the personification of one who is trapped in his insulated little environment.

The last guy was quite hip. We'll be paying the price for a generation!

When something like this comes out, you ask yourself: why? What is the purpose of this article. My guess is it was written to demean, and in the context of 9/11 and its aftermath, it merely demeans the author.

My point is, even in the most seemingly, stable, wish-I-could-have-a-marriage-like-that marriage you, the outsider, never know what's really happening.

How many times have we all been disappointed by people we respect because things weren't exactly as they seemed?

I'm very upset! I voted for Bush!

Would that someone had told me!

He doesn't watch much tv and doesn't eat sushi!

And he calls himself a good American!

P.S. to the idio who wrote this piece in the NY rag: What has Leonardo diCaprio appeared in that is of such all-fired artistic relevance?

What is it about this "Sex in Etnicity?"

Is there some ethnicity that has more sex?

If so, sign me up!
But why should we envy other ethnicities just because they do certain things more frequently than we? Doesn't everbody have something they do a little better, or have a little more of than everybody else? I'm sure that end the end it all evens out....

You say what?

Oh.

Nevermind.

but naming Norris as his favorite actor was pretty lame

Why? I happen to like Norris.

Oh.... I get it now. (duh) Although I will say that "warm and fuzzy" thing you're saying wasn't exactly my intent....

Anyway, ok, you caught me so I should clarify. I'm not saying I'm "Happy That W Likes Austin Powers In Particular", or that Liking Austin Powers is something to be hugely proud of and a mark of fine character (although, I liked the film, m'self... ;)

What I am saying is that I like it that snobby trendy people don't like a President who could be unashamed about liking something such as Austin Powers.

Anyway... kind of a silly issue by now, isn't it? ;) Best,

This is a clear attempt to do to W what they did to his dad, ie: play up the 'He's out of touch' lie.

Personaly, I consider pop culture to be lowbrow, not those who avoid it. This will backfire too.

I know what you are saying. The same sort of garbage was spread about by the same media goofheads, concerning Ronald Reagan (that he liked "jelly beans" caused VISIBLE eye-rolls among the New York muck-a-mucks, for example).

Yes, GWB is a down-home, genuine kind of guy, and I'm sure that while there are many cultural events that he must needs attend, bored out of his mind, he'd prefer shooting pool in the residence quarters at the WH of an evening.

The funny thing about this is, "Bubba" Clinton was as far from the cultivated man about town as you could imagine, Harvard and Oxford notwithstanding. Remember his quip about the AstroTurf in the back of his old El Camino? This is a guy who only wanted head given, no romantic interludes those.

The hypocrisy of the press continues to ... well, "amaze" is no longer the word. "Revolt" will have to do.

When reporters on the campaign trail used words like "vegan" or "yenta," Bush had no idea what they were talking about..

Am I missing something here?
Like who really friggin cares if Bush knews what "vegan" or "yenta" meant?

...maybe the "Pop Culture" police?
Talk about shallow and superficial....Mega barf to the max.

I can't help but be reminded of the comment of one of Gore's goons during the 2000 recount mess. I think it might have been Warren Christopher. He said something about the rule of law being nothing more than pop culture. Does anyone remember that? I about popped a blood vessel while yelling at my TV set over that one.

Too bad that Dowd article didn't get more exposure back then. I never saw it until now. If more people had read it, Bush would have gotten many more votes.
