This is a personal experience so indulge me. Also, I still have a bit of Guinness hangover, so forgive the vague details. However, what I do write is the truth from the events that took place.
Last night, after doing a performance at the Iota Club in Arlington, VA, I needed to relax, to get rid of the adrenaline built up from performing. So, a buddy who came to see me perform invited me to go to a hookah bar nearby.
For those who do not know what hookah is, it is a communal pipe, cooled by water, that you smoke flavored tobacco, called sheesha, from. No, it's not wacky tobacky. Hookah bars have become more popular as the government has come down hard against public smoking.
We enter Gaupos and are seated near a young, 20ish guy who is smoking alone while pounding on his Apple. Being the people person I am, I ask him why he is sitting alone in a hookah bar. He explained he was working and was hookahing while doing so.
He explained he was the aid of a congressman from Pennsylvania. I'm not surprised, because half of DC is on the staff of some congressman. I assumed he was a democrat, because that has been the safe bet for the past few years.
But, he's not. He's a Republican, and works for a Republican congressman.
Anyway, here is where the details are sketchy.
I ask hiom if he is a Ron Paul Republican, because around DC, most of the 20ish Repubs are Ron Paul followers.
He explains he is not, and goes on to say, "I really hate the Tea Party, because they do not know how things work in DC. They do not realize that you need to compromise to get anything done. They are too new to politics to know how things are done."
I explained that he really does not understand the Tea Party. He comments how they love you one moment and hate you the next. I say, "The Tea Party is not new to politics. I personally am not a member of the Tea Party, but I have several friends who are. They are not new to politics. They have been involved in Republican politics for decades. They are just tired of the compromising that the Republicans in congress have done."
He had that deer in the headlights look.
I continued, "Compromise is how we got where we are now. What the Tea Party wants is for the Republicans to stand their ground and not give an inch."
"But, that is not how things get done in DC," he responds.
"We conservatives would rather congress not get ANYTHING done than to compromise."
More deer in the headlights look.
Oh, and Guinness is good, but it tends to dull some memories. I wish I had more of the conversation to relay to you.
In the beginning there was ‘Right’ and ‘Wrong’, and we’ve been compromising in the ‘Wrong’ direction ever since.
Satan is the prince of compromise.
You are right, of course. Gridlock is gold. Our “betters” don’t understand that every law and rule they enact is an infringement on personal liberty.
Buford, I do not know if this is worth pingiong anyone, but you are the best at deciding that, so here’s a heads up.
Your last sentence summarizes perfectly what the tea parties are about. I’m proud of you for explaining things so well to that guy. We’re all tired of Republicans trying to “get things done”, when most of those things are the wrong things.
Perhaps, what bothers me most is that these limp-wristed congressmen are ready to compromise with demoncrats, but they will not compromise with us conservatives and take a stand once in a while.
Someone something has to take a stand and reverse this every-man-for-himself mentality in DC.
Be assured, if it was not the Tea Party, it would be something else. NO common sense AMERICAN thinks this is either tolerable or honorable.
America is hemorrhaging stability, credibility, integrity, vitality ..and Liberals stand around applauding just AS IF it couldnt be more natural.
For Conservatives, it is UNNATURAL! We think it is past time for a halt to this aberrant, reckless and irresponsible kind of government.
They might have wised up after John Sununu made the backroom deal to break the "no new taxes" pledge that got his boss fired, but no.
Bet the Dems got a real good snicker out of that one.
Good going. I do some of my best work while in a post Guinness
condition. Usually mine is brought on by vodka.
Your message contains a clear understanding of our problem with the same old, same old. Now Mr Bigshot Orrin Hatch is trying to take make us all believe that he too is starting to understand what a tea party is.
We need to make sure he is history in 2012.
Tho...given that his boss is a professional politician and has poisoned the mind of this little turd with the rubbish of compromise...I don't think it will do much good.
Guapos has hookah? I didn’t realize that
Or do you mean Gurapos in Court House right by the Wendys?
Compromise with evil; ends in death.
Likewise some patriots have similar feelings about the GOP in general...
Here’s an example by Dr Thomas DiLorenzo...
“It seems to me that the American public has been dumbed down so much by the government schools that they’re just going to go along with this until it either bankrupts us all or we make enough enemies out there that September 11 will seem like child’s play. You can’t do this without making a lot of enemies in the world. That’s my biggest fear that we won’t get rid of these Sons of Lincoln who run the Republican Party.
I agree with Clyde Wilson that America can’t be saved or returned to its roots until the Republican Party is destroyed.”
Yep that is the attitude that got us where were are.
Solution? It is TIME to DownSize DC! Close entire departments, reduce all un-necessary or unconstitutional functions. Eliminate U.S. Dept. of Education (re-education) (including their SWAT team) EPA, OSHA, HS, FDA, etc. Any worthwhile functions can be assumed by the States.
Now the good part. It is TIME to force Congress and the Senate to telecommute most of the year from their home district. Under the thumb of the electorate and away from the lobbyists. The Constitution states that Congress shall meet at least 1 time per year but says nothing about duration. It would require NO Legislation to implement.
The Texas State Legislature meets 1 time every 2 years unless the Governor calls for a special session. That has worked well for a long time. There is no reason that it would not work for the U.S. Government.
It is TIME!
Right, Gurapos. Typing on my phone, so editing is not the best.
Oh, that’s another thing he mentioned. He said he wished some government departments were gone. I mentioned the Department of Education. He said, “It’s too late for getting rid of it.”
I swear, it feels like our leaders in congress are the least ready to go to battle for America. Can you imagine if Eisenhower had said, “It’s too late to retake Europe.” What if Patton had said, “Well, North Africa is gone. Let’s go back home.”
Its too late for getting rid of it.
IT IS TIME!
This coming from someone in his 20s.
Compromise is fine if it is a choice of TV channels or restaurants. No harm done regardless of choice.
But when the choice is financial collapse or spending cuts, compromise is not the answer.
No to a debt increase & yes to DEEP spending, regulation, & bureaucracy cuts.
