What If The Base Is Wrong?
The Daily Caller ^ | July 17, 2015 | Matt K. Lewis, senior contributor

Posted on 07/19/2015 11:11:36 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

One of the explanations for Donald Trump’s surging poll numbers goes like this: The base doesn’t trust Republican leaders on immigration. The manifestation of this has been support for a man who tells it like it is.

The problem with this is that the immigration schism on the right is largely about rhetoric. Almost everybody agrees we must secure the border, and even the most hawkish anti-immigration reform advocates won’t admit they want to deport the 11 million, or so, illegals. There are differences of opinion on whether to allow for a pathway to citizenship or to legalize them, but almost nobody is advocating for mass deportation.

As such, the real disagreement, it seems, is about rhetoric: Should we talk about immigrants in a way that suggests we believe they are children of God who (in most cases) are seeking a better life for their family — or should we assume most of them are rapists?

Based on Trump’s popularity, there is a market for doing the latter.

Now, suppose you’re a Republican “leader” tasked with winning elections today — and in the future. Demographic shifts suggest that doubling down on white, working class, non-college educated males from rural areas won’t cut it forever.

Putting aside the fact that you might support immigration reform on its merits, wouldn’t it make sense to try to tone down rhetoric guaranteed to turn off segments of the national electorate that are actually growing? (And here, I’m not just talking about Hispanics.) That way you might be able to win elections, finally secure the border, defend the right to life, cut job-killing regulations, etc.

This brings us to some fundamental questions about leadership: Should leaders merely reflect the opinions of their followers, or try to lead them? My take is that, ideally, leaders persuade followers to follow them. But sometimes that doesn’t work. And then we’re left with this: If you’re the captain of a ship, and your most vocal passengers insist you to steer towards something that looks to you like an iceberg, do you do it?

"There are differences of opinion on whether to allow for a pathway to citizenship or to legalize them, but almost nobody is advocating for mass deportation."

And there is is the BS red herring...

INS claims they deport 1 million a year. Secure the border. Up that number to two million and in 5 years or so the problem is solved. No MASS DEPORTATION is needed.

Build a friggin' wall and man it, not a fence, a wall that makes the one in China look like a picket fence and do so ON BOTH BORDERS! Place military bases along ALL the borders every 200 miles or so, recruit young men and women to protect our borders and train them in all manner of mechanical skills while they are in the service. Put a huge emphasis on teaching them higher math and engineering disciplines and do so right on the bases. In less than 20 years you will have a huge well trained highly educated and well disciplined work force. Then dismantle the obstacles to creating manufacturing centers in the USA. A good start would be to close down K street and run everyone of those bastards out of the country. Then gut the EPA and all the other rat infested government bureaucracies in D.C. and send the whole bunch packing.

What a crop of crap! So if you are against illegals taking over the country you think they are all rapists. Statements like this are just P!sss!NG me off more!

These people don’t seem to realize that us ‘little people’ that are ‘haters’ are the ones living in communities seeing the damage being done. All the spots for Pre-K classes in school, that are intended for disadvantaged children, are given to Hispanics because they can’t speak English. We see how many Hispanic children are filling the schools and taking advantage of our tax dollars. We see them gaming the system ALL THE TIME in too many ways to list. We see the crimes they are committing in our communities. We see the anchor babies that are allowing them to take advantage of Medicaid and other entitlements. We see the criminal gang activities. I don’t even live near the border. Many of them are very nice and hardworking but they ARE taking jobs and creating problems. I don’t want to hear of AMNESTY OR ANYTHING LIKE IT UNTIL THE BORDER IS CLOSED! I will not vote for anyone that utters the word AMNESTY or defends someone calling me CRAZY.

You don't need mass deportations.

1) Secure the border.
2) End any and all assistance to illegals, including public education
3) Crippling fines for any business caught employing illegals
4) e verify to enable employers to check if someone is legal to work here.
5). Adopt Mexicos policies towards illegals

Just doing these things will lead to self deportation

Don’t deport them. Just cut off their access to welfare and social services and pass laws with mandatory jail time for anyone who hires an illegal. They’ll go home on their own.

I’m for mass deportation of employers who knowingly hire illegals. The rest should take care of itself.

We tried that, but the RINOs who run as Conservative at election time keep lying to us and stabbing us in the back. No more! Build the wall and then we'll talk.

“Almost everybody agrees we must secure the border”

Assertion at the beginning of his argument is not borne out by reality on the ground.

No, but it will work now, and then the demographic shifts won't happen.

Or execution, their choice. Give them two weeks to leave and after that we hunt them down like the vermin they have proven themselves to be. I’m very easy going about this :)

These people have attacked our borders and are to be treated as non-uniformed enemy combatants in my book.

“Should we talk about immigrants in a way that suggests we believe they are children of God who (in most cases) are seeking a better life for their family”

Children of God or not, the “better life” they seek for their family must be paid for by somebody, and it means that the “better life” eludes American families that are left with the bills.

So they can be “Children of God” back in Mexico, just as easily as they can anywhere else.

Misconstruing what voters want.

Slandering candidates by twisting their words and omitting context.

Destroying people for raising topics they don’t even want discussed.

That’s why I call them The Ministry Of Propaganda

More typical arrogant elitist “we’re far smarter than you are so just shut-up and do what you’re told” tripe from the GOPe and their pundit enablers.

Almost everybody agrees we must secure the border

The left wants to secure the border the same way they want a unicorn for Christmas. They don't really believe it's possible don't really intend to do anything practical to make it happen.

or should we assume most of them are rapists?

I don't assume they are all rapists, but I do assume they are all criminals. Anyone who is willing to ignore our immigration laws is willing to ignore any of our laws they find inconvenient.

Everyone does not agree we need to secure the borders. George Bush had two terms to secure the border and he did not do it. McStupid wants amnesty.

What the Rinos want is globalism. They want a North American territory like Europe has with open borders; both under the control of the UN.

Since I was a kid the promise of securing the borders has been with us. All they do is lie and bow down to Mexico.

Only if you ALSO do the following:

- Full, faithful reading of the 14th (aka no ‘anchor babies’)
- Complete confiscation of materials to pay for back taxes and deportation proceedings (is any criminal allowed to prosper from their actions?)
- Full reciprocity of the nation of origin before deportation
- Fine any/all employers $1M+ (tied to inflation) for each and EVERY offense
- Trials for treason for any office holder (up to the President) for aiding/abetting an invasion force. At the least, they should be removed from office for dereliction of duty.

I think the illegal ‘immigration’ would solve itself in short order thereafter.

BS meter went off the chart. This is not the entire picture and is a complete distortion. What conservatives want is for all laws to be enforced including employer verification and punishment. Once the jobs dry up the illegals will go home THE SAME WAY THEY GOT HERE.

Couldn't get past this propaganda.

A bunch of people on FR are with you. But no one who is running for President is.
