This tree looks like many old trees around my place. In 1979 hurricane Fredric broke all the tops out of the trees, some in half. When the trees re-grew, they formed a cradle like in this tree...I don't have any boulders in my trees though.

It should seem to be very simple to tell if the boulder has been in the tree(s) for mare than a single growing season - if so, the branches would have grown around the rock's surfaces.

Two men armed with only about 50 feet of stout rope and a weird sense of humor could account for the rock's placement.
