"barley crunchers".

In all respect to my mother who had to feed us, I would eat almost anything; the exception being her kale and barley. I still cringe, even though I am sure it is very healthful. (Unlike these gladiators apparently, we ate meat most days of the week.)

This post has arrived at the perfect time. My daughter is writing a weekly report for her Roman Arts class about the games. This will be an amusing side note. Thanks.

Roman gladiators were overweight vegetarians who lived on barley and beans

Somebody inform PETA.

contemporary references to gladiators as "barley crunchers".

does this mean that when Nero had Christians executed he would order:
"Set the "barley crunchers" on the "mackerel snappers?"

"Roman gladiators were overweight vegetarians"

That's just silly.

EVERYONE knows the Gladiators ate the Bread of Glory and drank the Ambrosia of Victory.

Time to rewatch "Gladiator". BTW, Gladiators apparently had sufficient sex appeal to drive the ladies wild. They reportedly had plenty of fanatical female fans.
