The man on the right is a craven snob and makes me flinch everytime I hear him open his mouth.
I don't mind it if the plumber I hire is a Democrat-- so long as he does a descent job cleaning my septic tank. Among the captains of the entertainment industries the actors are considered the hired help-- way d o w n the respect ladder. It's like that in most businesses- the face you see at the counter is usually not the brains of the company.
The real Jimmy Doolittle deserves far better from Hollywood that what he received in Pearl Harbor. And his life story would make a tremendous film. General Doolittle was a man of extraordinary gifts and drive; he earned a PhD in aeronautical engineering, won virtually all of the important air races and acrobatic competitions during the 1920s and 1930s, and was a tireless advocate for airpower. And his daring, carrier raid against Tokyo (something that more than a few "experts" said was impossible) was one of only many military accomplishments. Most people forget that, after the raid, General Doolittle was catapulted in rank from Lt Col to Brigadier General, and became a Lieutenant General less than a year later. After being transferred to Europe, he replaced Lieutenant General Ira Eaker as Commander of Eighth Air Force, got that command back on track after the debacle of Schweinfurt and Regensburg, and transformed the "Mighty Eighth" into the greatest bomber command in the history of aerial warfare.
Now that's the kind of life that deserves a truthful, fact-based film biography. There's even a well-known actor (Ed Harris) who looks like Doolittle and would be perfect for the part...Heck I'd even settle for a remake of "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," with Harris playing the part of Doolittle...
