SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Several major Web sites including Yahoo!, Microsoft and Google were inaccessible at times early Tuesday due to what the company that distributes them online called an attack.
The problem began about 9 a.m. EDT and lasted less than two hours, said Jeff Young, a spokesman for Akamai Technologies Inc., whose network of servers mirror some of the Web's top destinations to improve their performance.
Young called it a ''large scale, international attack on Internet infrastructure.'' However, there was no evidence that non-Akamai infrastructure was affected.
Keynote Systems Inc., a Web performance measurement service, said the only sites where it saw trouble Tuesday were those served by Akamai.

I noticed Google tanked this morning. Thought it was my connection.
Y'all weren't freepin someone were you?
Ironically enough they picked the day when Yahoo mail was to show off their new streamlined look and 100 MB of storage for free...I'm still having some trouble myself but at least I can see it was due to the attack.
I have a few different addresses (a couple on yahoo
and a couple on myway.com); the yahoo one I _used_ to have for FR got taken away for no reason: even though I hadn't
violated the terms of service, they said I did. I suspect someone was using my address to spam people (they can
"spoof" it, so even if you aren't breaking their rules
you can still find your email address taken away...
What irritates me about Yahoo is that they deleted all of the mail that was in my account under the old system-- I had about 6 items that I was saving. I must have missed the email that warned me that they were going to do that. They deleted my address book too. It's a good thing that I ony use it for a trash address.
hmmm... My account still has all the old stuff I was saving.
Yahoo Mail was also slashdotted at 9 AM
Yahoo has upped the storage limit on its free accounts to 100MB, but half the time I get "page not found" and have to refresh while trying to read email.
Yahoo is still slow as molasses at the moment, but I have managed to get in, and all is intact, even the settings to check my other POP accounts.
When I tried to open my Yahoo mail, I got a message that said my account had been closed either because of inactivity (I empty trash and bulk mail every week) or because I requested that it be closed (never happened). A glitch, I guess.
Haven't been able to access Google or my yahoo mail for two days. Hmmnn......
I am finally able to access google and yahoo mail now @ 5:33 p.m. eastern time......
I'm afraid to try again. It freezes my computer.
