Bush to announce US troop pullouts from Europe, Asia on Monday: report -

LONDON Aug 14, 2004 The United States is expected to announce Monday that it is pulling 100,000 troops out of Europe and Asia, the Financial Times newspaper reported Saturday. It said the withdrawals -- the largest restructuring of Washington's military presence abroad since World War II -- would be announced in a speech by US President George W. Bush.

Citing "people briefed on the plan" in a front-page story datelined London, the newspaper said two-thirds of the reductions would be in Europe, with 70,000 troops -- mostly from Germany -- being sent back to stateside bases.

"In Asia, the drawdown is expected to include the 3,500-soldier brigade from South Korea, recently deployed in Iraq, but will also include scaling down presences in several other countries in the region," it said.

Germany will still host the largest contingent of US troops in Europe, but the pullouts could nevertheless see the departure of the 1st Armoured Division and the 1st Infantry Division, the Financial Times said.

According to a friend stationed at Ft.Bragg, this is true. Pretty positive reaction to it from the troops.

This pullout from Germany has been long in the works. Ramstein will remain as will a few other select bases. Some will be relocated to Poland.

Yes, it has and a Poland relocation is a very reasonable move.

....IT'S ABOUT F'in TIME!! :>

And to try to reduce the chore of repentance by stating "it's about Kerry time" could be misconstrued and taken wrongly by some! ; )

Heh Heh. This is so beautiful! The euroweenies have become so conditioned to G.I. paychecks contributing to their economy, yet if (when) they howl about it, it'll make them and their whiney-ass "citizens" look like the dependent, ungrateful, Bush-hating frauds and hypocrites that they are.

Way overdue. Our troops should be stationed where they are appreciated--here!!

I agree it is way overdue, but the positioning of our military assets around the globe has nothing to do with whether they are appreciated on not. With the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, we need to position our troops and other military assets based on the perceived threat, today and in the future. Rumsfeld has been talking about placing some quick reaction bases in the former Eastern Europe countries like Bulgaria, Romania, and Poland. We are also talking about staying another permanent carrier group in the Western Pacific. It will be interesting to see the reaction of Congress and the Dems.

Sure it's a relocation but why should we leave the Best of the Best to protect Germany and France when they will do America more good somewhere else. We've done enough for France and Germany.

It is a given that the 'Rats are scrambling to find a way to spin this negatively - even though this is a move that ameliorates all their supposed concerns about US imperialism and occupationist policies.

Funny how we have all grown to accept that 'Rats are incapable of assessing any move by Republicans, as to how it relates to the esoteric good of the nation. They are self-centeredly obsessed with how any issue affects their chances of regaining power.

The closing of some of the German bases was discussed in the late 1990s........and um, guess who was president at that time.......er ah, a certain slick willie.

The German's knew it too and all their bashing of America by Schroeder tells me that they didn't believe it would happen. They thought Dubya was another liar like slick willie. Guess they found out that Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld was unlike his predecessor, Cohen, in a million ways.

Thank heaven for that.

It's about damn time.

I'm gonna sit back, open an ice cold brewski and enjoy watching those socialist economies collapse one by one.
