"Fired up" Kerry eyes 2008 race, plans on visible role in Senate
Seattle Times ^ | 11/9/04 | Mike Allen

Democrat John Kerry plans to use his Senate seat and long lists of supporters to remain a major voice in U.S. politics despite losing the presidential race last Tuesday, and he is assessing the feasibility of trying again in 2008, friends and aides said yesterday.

Kerry will attend a post-election lame-duck Senate session that begins next week and has said he is "fired up" to play a highly visible role, the friends and aides said.

Aides said Kerry is relishing the prospect of renewed combat with President Bush, fighting such measures as the president's proposal to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.

Kerry's plans contrast starkly with the approach taken by former Vice President Al Gore, who all but disappeared from the political scene after losing to Bush in the disputed 2000 presidential election.

Kerry fueled talk about a 2008 bid during remarks at a Washington restaurant Saturday night. He provoked a thunderous reception by reminding about 400 campaign aides and volunteers that Ronald Reagan twice sought the Republican nomination for president before winning it in 1980.

"Sometimes God tests you," Kerry told the crowd, according to an aide. "I'm a fighter, and I've come back before."

Bob Shrum, Kerry's chief campaign consultant, told reporters during a Democratic panel yesterday that Kerry "will be active and vocal. He has one of the most powerful lists in the Democratic Party and one of the most powerful fund-raising bases ... and I think he intends to use it to speak out."

But several Democrats expressed skepticism about Kerry's plans, saying they think the party needs a fresh face and must turn a corner.

"I can't imagine people are going to say, 'It worked pretty well last time. This is what we need next time,' " said one Democrat involved in Kerry's campaign strategy, who requested anonymity.

Kerry has mostly remained at his Boston home since Election Day and has spent some of that time preparing for his return to the Senate. The friends and aides said he wants to use his new following and credibility to become a major force on a range of legislation that will extend well beyond his previous portfolio of national-security issues.

He also is contemplating establishing a political-action committee and perhaps a think tank to elevate his role during the jockeying over the definition and leadership of the Democratic Party. Kerry lost to Bush by three percentage points in the popular vote and by 34 electoral votes. The president carried 31 states to 19 for Kerry.

Shrum made his remarks during an appearance at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast with James Carville, chief strategist of President Clinton's first campaign, and Stan Greenberg, a Democratic pollster. The session started out as a clinical dissection of what went right for Bush and wrong for Kerry. But it quickly became a blunt, emotional discussion of the future of the Democratic Party.

"I'm not in denial. Reality hit me," Carville said. "Let's take the greatest morality story of all — we're born again," he added, in a play on words connoting both his view that the party needs a fundamental change, as well as the importance of evangelical Christians to Bush.

"The purpose of a political party is to win elections, and we're not doing that," he said.

It's not going to happen.

Having a visible role in the Senate would require Kerry to actually show up for work.

Reagan never lost once he got that nomination, though. Kerry, on the other hand, will forever be known as a looHOO-zerHER.

Oh, yeah--there is also that Massachusetts-tax-hiking-anti-military-international-criminal-court-loving-UN-worshipping-liberal thing.

Just received this from a friend. I won't identify him, except to say HE LIVES IN CHAPPAQUA!!!

Sorry about the length. It's just so chocked full of laffs.

A Democrat's Concession Speech

My fellow Americans, the people of this nation have spoken, and spoken with a clear voice. So I am here to offer my concession.

I concede that I overestimated the intelligence of the American people. Though the people disagree with the President on almost every issue, you saw fit to vote for him. I never saw that coming. That's really special. And I mean "special" in the sense that we use it to describe those kids who ride the short school bus and find ways to injure themselves while eating pudding with rubber spoons. That kind of special.

I concede that I misjudged the power of hate. That's pretty powerful stuff, and I didn't see it. So let me take a moment to congratulate the President's strategists: Putting the gay marriage amendments on the ballot in various swing states like Ohio... well, that was just genius. Genius. It got people, a certain kind of people, to the polls. The unprecedented number of folks who showed up and cited "moral values" as their biggest issue, those people changed history. The folks who consider same sex marriage a more important issue than war, or terrorism, or the economy... Who'd have thought the election would belong to them? Well, Karl Rove did. Gotta give it up to him for that. [Boos.] Now, now. Credit where it's due.

I concede that I put too much faith in America's youth. With 8 out of 10 of you opposing the President, with your friends and classmates dying daily in a war you disapprove of, with your future being mortgaged to pay for rich old peoples' tax breaks, you somehow managed to sit on your asses and watch the Cartoon Network while aging homophobic hillbillies carried the day. You voted with the exact same anemic percentage that you did in 2000. You suck. Seriously, y'do.

[Cheers, applause] Thank you. Thank you very much.

There are some who would say that I sound bitter, that now is the time for healing, to bring the nation together. Let me tell you a little story. Last night, I watched the returns come in with some friends here in Los Angeles. As the night progressed, people began to talk half-seriously about secession, a red state / blue state split. The reasoning was this: We in blue states produce the vast majority of the wealth in this country and pay the most taxes, and you in the red states receive the majority of the money from those taxes while complaining about 'em. We in the blue states are the only ones who've been attacked by foreign terrorists, yet you in the red states are gung ho to fight a war in our name. We in the blue states produce the entertainment that you consume so greedily each day, while you in the red states show open disdain for us and our values. Blue state civilians are the actual victims and targets of the war on terror, while red state civilians are the ones standing behind us and yelling "Oh, yeah!? Bring it on!"

More than 40% of you Bush voters still believe that Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11. I'mimpressed by that, truly I am. Your sons and daughters who might die in this war know it's not true, the people in the urban centers where al Qaeda wants to attack know it's not true, but those of you who are at practically no risk believe this easy lie because you can. As part of my concession speech, let me say that I really envy that luxury. I concede that. Healing? We, the people at risk from terrorists, the people who subsidize you, the people who speak in glowing and respectful terms about the heartland of America while that heartland insults and excoriates us... we wanted some healing. We spoke loud and clear. And you refused to give it to us, largely because of your high moral values. You knew better: America doesn't need its allies, doesn't need to share the burden, doesn't need to unite the world, doesn't need to provide for its future. Hell no. Not wh en it's got a human shield of pointy-headed, atheistic, unconfrontational breadwinners who are willing to pay the bills and play nice in the vain hope of winning a vote that we can never have. Because we're "morally inferior" I suppose, we are supposed to respect your values while you insult ours. And the big joke here is that for 20 years, we've done just that.

It's not a "ha-ha" funny joke, I realize, but it's a joke all the same.

Today, I am also announcing my candidacy for President in 2008. And I make this pledge to you today: THIS time, next time, there will be no pandering. This time I will run with all the open and joking contempt for my opponents that our President demonstrated towards the cradle of liberty, the Ivy League intellectuals,"media elite"and the "white-wine sippers".

This time I will not pretend that the simple folk of America know just as much as the people who devote their lives to serving and studying the nation and the world. They don't. So that's why I'm asking for your vote in 2008,

America. I'm talking to you, you ignorant, slack-jawed yokels, you bible-thumping, inbred drones, you redneck, racist, chest-thumping, perennially duped, grade-school grads. Vote for me, because I know better, and I truly believe that I can help your smug, sorry asses.

Thank you, and may God, if he does in fact exist, bless each and everyone of you.

Give it up, Lurch. Just because your initials are JFK and you're from MA doesn't mean you're meant to be president.

Kerry would do better if he kept a low profile. Now he is just fighting to avoid loosing his Senate seat. What would he do then? Go shopping and to spas with Teresa? Throwing a football will become a little boring after a while.

he is "fired up" to play a highly visible role

Is that in contrast to his currently invisible role?

My dear recently departed mother had a term for people like Kerry, "He thinks his sh*t don't smell." Seems to fit.

So, does this mean Kerry is actually going to show up in the Senate. Bet the folks in Massachusetts will be pleased to see him doing his job for a change.

20 years in the Senate, nearly 2 years totally absent, and now he wants to finally do something? What?? He obviously has no ideas or we would have heard them during the LONG campaign. Oh right...he has a plan. I nearly forgot!

That gives us 4 years to get that 180 signed, or to have some bowtied Pentagon spoksman leak it.
