Does he actually lose due to being fairly beaten, or does he take a dive just to move on with his life? It's hard to visualize anyone beating him in a fair all-out contest of brains and speed. The man is scary smart.

The feds should pay him ten million dollars a year to sit in an office (he can pick which one) and think deep thoughts about trends, etc. Seriously. The man is a national treasure, a one man brain trust.

There used to be a saying about gatherings of high-powered minds: "There hasn't been such a collection of erudition since Jefferson dined alone."

The same could be said about Jennings. His knowledge, and ability to tap it in under a second, is simply astounding.

There's enough randomness in any such contest that even the very best will lose one game at some point. Basically, as long as somebody had at least half his dollar total and got Final Jeopardy right while Jennings got it wrong, he would lose.

In the vast majority of games nobody was within 50% of Jennings after the two rounds, so it was a moot point. But it's not surprising that there would be an occasion where a) someone had at least half as much money, b) that person got Final Jeopardy correct, and c) Jennings got it wrong.

Given the question he goes down on, I am somewhat surprised.

It was one I knew without even having to think.

If he's like most of the Jeopardy pro's, it's probably something like, "It is the name of the first book in the Bible."

The man is scary smart.

He may be extra smart, but not necessarily. Clearly, he has a photographic memory. They are not always connected.

Does he actually lose due to being fairly beaten, or does he take a dive just to move on with his life?

That would preclude him from being smart. LOL
