DETROIT (AP) — The number of Detroit residents has fallen below 900,000 for the first time since 1920, according to estimates released by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments.
The agency said Monday that its estimate of the city's population, as of Feb. 1, is 899,387. That's a 5.5-percent drop — or 51,883 people — since the 2000 U.S. Census, which showed the city had dropped below 1 million.
Detroit's population peaked at about 2 million in the early 1950s. Since 2000, when it had 951,270 residents, Detroit has lost the most people of any U.S. city with 100,000 or more residents.
"Clearly, that's sobering news," Howard Hughey, a spokesman for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, said of the SEMCOG estimate.
"A lot of this decline is economic flight and we're aggressively addressing the root of that flight," Hughey told the Detroit Free Press. "We will continue to add strategies to grow Detroit neighborhood by neighborhood."
Annual population estimates compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau usually count about 10,000 fewer residents than does SEMCOG. The annual Census Bureau estimates will be available in July.

Ah, yes...with the Muslim's call to prayer disturbing the peace five times a day, one wonders why they are losing population. I'm sure as soon as more Muslim babies are born, it will pick up again.

No, it's been given up to the lowlife, corrupt mayor and police department. Who wants to live or work in a place that taxes you on top of the state and federal taxes.....all to see Kwame Kilpatrick acting like Detroit is his frathouse playground? Who wants to live somewhere that is planning "African Town" for BLACK OWNED ONLY busineses? The schools are literally falling apart while the people of Detroit do absolutely nothing but blame everyone else for their mess.

Cincinnati public schools spend almost twice as much per student than our suburban schools and they are rated academic emergency. Our suburban schools spend a lot less and are rated excellent. What ticks me off is that our suburban schools could achieve much more if they weren't shackled with these lowered standards, that the city schools can't even meet.
Crime, apathy, and major discipline problems in our city schools are rampant. In the suburbs of Cincinnati we are seeing so much exodus out of the city and city schools that the problems are following.
We're considering moving even further away from the city than we are now.

Yup, if one wants to do business in Detroit, they must be black or some type of minority. White people need not apply.
Not necessarily... Chicago is run by corrupt gangster thugs. The difference is that Chicago's gangster thugs are relatively benevolent, pro-business, and race blind. Detroit's gangster thugs, on the other hand, hate capitalism, hate freedom, and chase anyone with money or fair skin into the suburbs.
I grew up in Northern Ohio, and I am convinced that the whole industrial Midwest will continue to decline in population. This is due to three factors:
1. Low cost manufactured imports from China & elsewhere.
2. Too friggin cold.
3. Unions are still too strong to make it affordable to do business there, compared to the non-union sunbelt.
Chicago is a Dem-run city that is probably the best run city in the country. No city wage tax. Only a tiny city sales tax. Clean streets. Little crime in most neighborhoods.
