DEARBORN, Mich. -- A dog was shot in the parking lot of a Dearborn strip mall on Monday, police said.
A 46-year-old man was walking near the Pier 1 Imports store at the strip mall on Michigan Avenue when he encountered the animal, police said.
The man, who said he felt threatened by the nearly 80-pound Rotweiller-mix, pulled out his gun and fired a shot at the dog, striking it in the leg, police said.
Some witnesses in the area, however, said that the dog appeared to be harmless, Local 4 reported.
Police said prior to the shooting, the dog's owner had contacted animal control to report that it had somehow escaped from the yard.
The dog was taken to a nearby veterinary office to be treated and was expected to survive.
The 46-year-old man, from Southfield, was detained by police.
Authorities said the man does have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, but they are seeking charges for unlawful discharge of a firearm causing harm to an animal.

Step back and think about what you're saying, Joshie.

You lost me right there.
Yes, but no one said this dog was threatening anyone or anything. The man said he "felt" threatened. Well, heck, some days I "feel" lots of things. It doesn't necessarily make them so.
People who do that are sick and need help.
With 800,000 dog bites severe enough to require hospitalization annually in the USA and and estimated 5,000,000 annually altogether, reality and statistics say that the dog was likely to be at fault. Read the dog bite link and notice what breeds are particular offenders. Rottweilers are up near the top.
"People who do that are sick and need help."
Guess you've never stepped a toe outside The Big City, LOL! When ferral cats, or wild PETA-released mink, or racoons kill my chickens, I kill them.
Now, who has more RIGHTS in a situation like that? Me, to earn a living, the chickens who did absolutely NOTHING to the predator to deserve death, or the ferral cat, racoon or mink?
What if a dog mauled one of your Grandkids? You'd think nothing of grabbing the nearest 2x4 or hammer or baseball bat and coming to your child's aid, correct? And if it meant the dog died, well, then the dog dies and the child lives.
OMG! I guess we both need psychological help. ;)
FWIW, and for the zillionth time: IT IS AGAINST WISCONSIN LAW TO SHOOT FERRAL CATS. Please go pick on the states that actually have laws on their books that allow it. This has been a Public Service Announcement. :)
Australian Shepherds are great dogs. Smart.
Had the dog been on a leash, it would still be alive. Dogs are not people. Live with it.
WELL! This man should have finished this dog off and the police should leave him alone. If the state needs to work on the Concealed Carry law to make it like Florida then they should get to work. The man defended himself. God Bless America. The Constitution and the Second Amendment will prevail!
Eeek! Glad she did the right thing and told Dad. :)
Snakes? I won't flame ya for that phobia. My friend has a Ball Python that is really interesting. I love to hold her; she feels so cool.
I don't mind snakes if I know where they are; I've been startled many times out in the garden over the years, and those encounters have shortened my life, for sure! ;)
Thanks for the ping.
Outraged this man was detained? Well, let me explain something about the dog that was shot. First of all, he sleeps every night with my three cats. He likes hie belly rubbed, he loves attention. He's so dumb, infact, that if danger stared him right in the face, he'd probably want to lick it and get pet by it. Dangerous animal? Yeah, okay. My dog, Jake, has never strayed from me once since I have had him, and that has been since he was born.
How did he get away? Well, the media report you read isn't quite accurate. He was in my tow truck at the time, and we were preparing to leave my house, and while he was in my truck, it began to rain. Never been in my vehicle before as it rained, and was spooked by the wiper blades. As I let him out to go back in the house, he fled. Never happened before, how was I supposed to imagine it happening now? You, sir, offend me. Have a little bit more sympathy.
You know what the Detectives have told me this man's excuse for this brutal act was? Childhood memories of living in East Detroit where neighboors abused dogs, turned them violent, and they would chase him. This is West Dearborn, not the "hood" or the "ghetto" as East Detroit is. What that man is in a criminal. An unlawful individual who deserves to be burned at the stake. If he was such a decent human being, why is he carrying a .40 caliber Taurus revolver?
As I said to the last inconsiderate person who seems to think my dog is some dinosuar with a homocidal intent, I'll clarify a little bit to you as well. Growling? Jake has never growled at anything. I don't think he even knows how. He loves people, he loves attention. Give me a break.
All of your syrupy nauseating pap about what a sweet pwecious wittle daring your dog is, is irrelevant. The fact remains that the guy felt threatened by the animal, and it was NOT under your control.
You, sir, offend me. Have a little bit more sympathy.
And your bs would offend me too if I gave a $hit. I'm not wasting any sympathy on a dog. My sympathy is to the guy who is getting a lot of grief because of your uncontrolled animal. And it is also irrelevant how many times it did this before or how and why it escaped your control; the FACT is that it was not under your control at the time. YOU have a responsibility to keep your animal under control. If anyone is to blame it is not the dog which after all was only an animal, or the guy who shot it - it is YOU for being careless about keeping tabs on your dog.
If he was such a decent human being, why is he carrying a .40 caliber Taurus revolver?
and now we get to the real bottom line. You're claiming that decent human beings don't carry guns. Decent human being carry guns to protect themselves from dangerous animals both 2 and 4 legged.
