U.S. confirms Gitmo soldier kicked Quran
Arizona Daily Star - AP ^ | Jun 3, 2005 | ROBERT BURNS

By ROBERT BURNS AP Military Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon on Friday confirmed for the first time that a U.S. soldier deliberately kicked a Guantanamo Bay prisoner's Muslim holy book in violation of the military's rules for handling the Quran.

In other confirmed incidents, prison guards threw water balloons in a cell block, causing an unspecified number of Qurans to get wet; a guard's urine splashed on a detainee and his Quran; an interrogator stepped on a Quran during an interrogation; and a two-word obscenity was written in English on the inside cover of a Quran.

The findings are among the results of an investigation last month by Brig. Gen. Jay Hood, the commander of the detention center in Cuba, that was triggered by a Newsweek magazine report - later retracted - that a U.S. soldier had flushed one Guantanamo Bay detainee's Quran down a toilet.

The story stirred worldwide controversy and the Bush administration blamed it for deadly demonstrations in Afghanistan.

Last week, Hood disclosed that he had confirmed five cases of mishandling of the Quran, but he refused to provide details. Allegations of Quran desecration at Guantanamo Bay have led to anti-American passions in many Muslim nations, although Pentagon officials have insisted that the problems were relatively minor and that U.S. commanders have gone to great lengths to enable detainees to practice their religion in captivity.

Hood said last week that he found no credible evidence that a Quran was ever flushed down a toilet. He said a prisoner who was reported to have complained to an FBI agent in 2002 that a military guard threw a Quran in the toilet has since told Hood's investigators that he never witnessed any form of Quran desecration.

The guard probably saw the quran on fire, and used what means he had available to put it out!

I guess there weren't enough people killed in anti-US riots.

They can report this all they like, it still doesn't change the FACT that Newsweek LIED.

expect the wheels to be put in motion to close Gitmo and repatriate (release) these prisoners to Pakistan and Afghanistan now.

They'll probably release them to LA instead, and issue them drivers licenses.

I am waiting for the ACLU to file petitions against religious materials being distributed in US government-run facilities.

Who is ratting our soldiers out? This is a far bigger concern than a boys-will-be-boys overreaction under enormous stress.

You weren't strong enough in some of your "statements" that will be made...

John F'n Kerry is already saying that he will get on the floor Monday and propose impeachment for President Bush because of the Iraq war...therefore, I have a feeling Kerry's statement would be more like--"I knew it, just one more reason to impeach Bush!!!"

It's a shame that MSM doesn't see how ridiculous they are. They support the fascist terrorists ilk who killed 3000 people on 9/11 by equating their actions to a soldier kicking a Koran at Gitmo.

LOL...they're idiots.

Why is the Koran protected and the Bible is not?

Exactly..... when my husband served in Desert Storm the soldiers had to disguise their bible, because it could have offended the people over there. (Caugh), say what? And the ones who screem about the kicking the Koran right now are the ones who tell me about the bible etc.(caugh) what???

What is also bad is that some "conservative" media and politicians are now starting to call for yet another all out "investigative committee" to look into this---

I thought that had been done for AG--and these charges in Gitmo are from a long time ago...

PLUS, you have that judge ruling yesterday that the Pentagon has to release all of the pictures and VIDEOS from Abu Ghraib....

Just think about how many of our troops and contract workers in Iraq and Afghanistan will have there heads chopped off now!!!

On my Yahoo headlines, the first one is about the Koran kicking because getting Bush and vindicating Newsweek is always important. Under it is the report of a real massacre. It is ridiculous and disconcerting.

My hope-the media is overplaying a weak hand.

I have seen more uproar in the press over this stupid book than people being beheaded on video. Where are people's values? It's a damn book. If these people really believe in what are on the pages they would carry the meaning in their hearts and not obsess over printed words.

Hehe. Here's a thought.

Panty torture. But instead of using some female soldier's panties...lets get a few used pairs of those white BVDs from Saddam...

Now THAT would be real torture!

This is too much.
