...
Previous research has linked television exposure in young children with attention problems and difficulty learning to read.

three new studiesHow high must this pile be by now? 3000?
Some people really need to get an original idea once in a while. Then again, as long as we keep paying them to come up with old ones, I can't blame them.

The fun thing about these 'studies' is that they're examining one factor among thousands of others with regards to the situations, living conditions, and genetic makeup of these children. I spent tons of time watching television as a child, and I turned out just fine. Why? Because my mother was actively involved in my schoolwork and personal life, and because I was lucky enough to be born with a decent intellect. Amazing what a bit of parenting can accomplish.

Too much TV might inhibit learning Especially too much network news programming. It turns kids into economic and political ignoramuses, i.e. liberals.

Hello,
It has also just been discovered by researchers that too much Freeping inhibits housework. Film at 11. :)
Glad to be here, MOgirl

There's a new book out ("Freakonomics") by a U of Chicago economist actually claiming that too much TV is NOT bad for kids. The book also counters some other intuitive wisdom.
There's another recent book (name escapes me) claiming that viewing TV and other popular culture actually improves IQ.
I'm still not letting my kids watch much TV. It just seems like a machine that makes one stupid. Ever notice how dopey kids look when they stare at that box?

My real concern isn't so much the intelligence as the inability to socialize with other kids. There are kids on our block who don't know how to play. All they know is how to invite someone over to watch movies or play the game boy. They have no other innovative thoughts in their little mushy brains.

Agreed. And most kids are naturally imaginative and playful. In essence, parents teach kids to watch TV; it's a cheap, electronic babysitter.

This gives me hope. I have submitted a federal request for funds to study the link, if any, between water and drowning.
