When I toured the Catacombs a lot of years ago, the guide brought up this point -- presumably, it was thought about a long time ago, but there was nothing scientific to back it up.

Christianity is an off shoot of Judaism.

Why would this finding from the early years of the church be such a surprise?

not a problem--Jesus and Most of his disciples were Jews--
Now if some dumbass were to change Jewish origin to Islamic (as the mad Muslims seem intent upon doing) There
would most clearly be a problem.

It mystifies me when some people use the 'BCE' or 'Before Common Era' in books and articles ABOUT CHRISTIANITY! I saw a guidebook of sites of interest in Isreal relating to the life of Christ, and for some reason the dates were all labeled BCE.

"Jews were buried only with Jews and Christians only with Christians," says Leonard Rutgers of Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

It is not at all surprising that Jews dug catacombs prior to Christianity. My understanding has long been that many of the early Christians in Rome were former pagans, but a fair amount were also Jews. However, many of the Jews who did not become Christians became very fearful that continued association with the Christians would further endanger them, and this lead to the ostracism.

Thanks Blam. As did many conquered peoples, the Jews headed for Rome. According to Michael Grant, a significant fraction of the Empire's total population was Jewish. Y'know, before the massacre of Alexandria and such.

Because BC -- Before Christ is inaccurate.
History shows that Herod the Great died in 4 BCE. So Jesus of Narereth would have been born at least by then. Can you have Christ four years "Before Christ" ???

Startling new data from the Student-of-the-Obvious Commission.

Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade:

Jones and Schneider are in the Catacombs, she sees a painting on the wall and blows off some cobwebs.

Dr. Elsa Schneider: What's this one?

Indiana Jones: Ark of the Covenant.
Dr. Elsa Schneider: Are you sure?
Indiana Jones: Pretty sure.

Often common sense is all that's necessary. Christianity is the child of Judaism, and inherited most, if not all of its secular as well as spiritual ceremonies.
Christianity outgrew and outnumbered Judaism until we arrive at the present state. It is both logical and expected that the Christians not only coexisted with Jews in the catacombs, but eventually outnumbered them.

Well, for one of a number of reasons, because Jesus was not born in the year 1. Most scholars recognize that this was a dating error perpetrated in the 4th century. Jesus was born, I believe, a few years earlier.

Not exactly true. Christianity renounces Jewish law, which is why Christians eat pig meat.
