U.S. calls on Fox to end violence ***MEXICO CITY - With the American consulate in Nuevo Laredo closed in protest Monday, U.S. officials called on Mexican President Vicente Fox's government to "do what is necessary" to bring the gangland violence there under control.

"In short, we would like them to do what needs to be done to put an end to the violence," a State Department official said, on condition of anonymity, through the U.S. Embassy's press office. "We believe that the Mexican government has that capability."

U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza last Friday closed the consulate in Nuevo Laredo for a week, following a shootout in an upscale residential neighborhood that involved automatic rifles, grenades and rocket launchers. The State Department officials on Monday said the U.S. government wants to see drug gangs in the city denied such heavy weaponry.

......U.S. officials with knowledge of the crackdown insisted last week in a meeting with reporters that more can and should be done by the Mexican government. They said that leading gangsters in the city need to be targeted and U.S.-supplied intelligence needed to be acted upon more quickly...........***

GOP courts consensus on border policy (There's a lot to chew on)******....Last week, Rep. John Culberson, R-Houston, introduced legislation that would allow border-state governors to establish armed citizen militias to patrol the U.S. borders and catch people trying to cross illegally....*** ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ***.........House Majority Leader Tom DeLay has said Congress should think about passing separate bills, one dealing with enforcement against illegal immigration and another creating a guest-worker program.....**** ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ***.............Senior White House adviser Karl Rove has begun meeting with key lawmakers, such as GOP Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, who have introduced immigration measures..........A comprehensive proposal from Sens. Cornyn and Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., would require all illegal immigrants to leave the U.S. within five years and then apply to return either as temporary guest workers or as immigrants in the process of obtaining green cards......*** __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ***..............[President] Bush has enlisted Republicans such as former House Majority Leader,Dick Armey of Dallas to build a lobbying machine made up of corporations and activist groups that will try to win over lawmakers when the president decides on a specific reform bill.............. After an illegal alien sneaks into this country and gets a taste of American life, why would anybody in their right mind go back to stinkin corrupt third world shithole like Mexico. Nice try Jorge Bush but once they are here, they ain't leaving. All they have to do is drop a few kids compliemnts of the stupid US tax payers and bleeding heart liberals will be screaming bloody murder if the illegal and his family were asked to leave. What a friggin joke.

"Bush's plan would provide temporary visas to guest workers. They would have to leave afterward, and program participants would get no special consideration when they apply for legal residence."

If we need more workers in America, then RAISE the immigration quotas across the Board for ALL countries and allow in people who want to become AMERICANS and raise their children as AMERICANS - not just use the U.S. as a milk cow to secure dollars to funnel back down to some foreign rathole.

I don't want "guest workers" who live in ethnic enclaves and provide a second class individual who will be the source of domestic unrest - that's EXACTLY what has happened in Europe with Turks and North Africans.

Workers' visas?

Every child born to the temporary worker will become a U.S. citizen. How does that impact the parents and extended family of the newly-minted "American" children? Sounds like a gold mine for all the foreign workers and conveniently-born offspring.

Are the newly-minted children entitled to all medical, food and other free benefits while the parent worker is here?

All my questions seem to lead to other questions. My brain is turning to jello.

Seems to me the "Born in the USA" law has to be changed in tandem with the workers' legislation.

This is a significant development if it holds.

Convertability to US Citizenship is what the open border socialists were insisting on CITIZENSHIP for illegals.

The most likely "reform" are the various plans that rename ILLEGAL migrant workers to "guest workers." As "guests" they will no longer have to sneak across the border.

There. That ought to do it. Now shut up, citizens!

Our government in action.

Security, yes! But not at the cost of government-subsidized "cheap" labor.

He said a well-run guest worker program would help border security by taking pressure off the Border Patrol.

What a bunch of pure unadulterated disingenuous bilge. His amnesty proposal put major pressure on the Border Patrol by encouraging aliens to enter illegally in hopes of getting in on the program. If he was really so concerned about the pressure that the BP was facing, all he had to do was agree to a guest-worker proposal that excluded people who have already entered the country illegally, so that they would then not have had an incentive to cross the border prematurely. But he out and out refused to do this, despite the fact that that was the only reason his proposal was being held up in Congress. So spare me your crocodile tears, George.

"It's very important for the American people to know immigration reform will be done with a border security initiative that makes it clear to the people that we will do everything we can to stop illegal people from coming into our country," Bush said.

"Evererything we can"??? Baloney. Almost reminds me of Clinton with that load of garbage.

"President Bush has entered into an agreement with the Presidents of both Mexico and Canada which is outlined by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). This plan is called the ‘North American Community’ and they intend to open our borders now and fully integrate our economies by 2010. They intend to create a new economic block similar to the European Union. The difference is that the American public is not being asked to discuss, support, or vote on this new national construct as the Europeans have......
