I actually think that the "I take responsibility" speech and attitude will be thought of as one of the President's finest hours. To be fair, many on the left have never had, in their entire lives, the chance to watch an adult take responsibility for ANYTHING!
Pres Bush is our first MBA president. Even the very best managers sometimes are in charge when thing get snafu-ed; real men say "I was at the top, the buck stops here" and then move on.
In addition, one of the most telling tests of any boss is:
what do they do when a subordinate is just not measuring up? There is a balanced between loyalty (good, to a degree) and realizing that even a good buddy is in over their head and replacing them with someone who CAN handle the job (also good, to a degree). I think the President did what he had to do.

I can assure you that the lefties are saying that the President was only following Darth Rove's orders, and that he didn't really mean it. But, as you point out, it may have pendtrated the skulls of some of them. Even the uber-hardcore Donna Brazile seems to have changed her attitude. At least, momentarily.
