Last year, Steven Livingston, professor of political communication at George Washington University, astonished attendees at a conference on the geopolitical pros and cons of satellite imagery. He didn't produce evidence of new military mobilizations or global pandemics. Instead,

To a certain degree, TV news has been manipulating reality for audiences for years by selecting which clips to show, which camera angles to shoot, and when to start and stop the video. The Rodney King beating left a different impression with people who saw the whole clip vs. those who saw only a small part of it. At right-wing protests, they purposely filming the looneys (I've watched them do this) while at left-wing protests they avoid filming the looneys (and given their numbers, they must put a lot of effort into it) to give the impressoin that right-wing protesters are looneys and the left-wing protesters are normal people (in my experience at actual protests and marches, the opposite is true). And so on.

It's only a matter of time. Here's hoping the same internet that forced the Rathergate issue can act as a counterbalance.

This may be a futile hope, however, because I don't know of any way at present to demonstrate that expertly done fake footage is really fake except through access to the original images. Even then, there can be questions as to whether it's actually the footage in question, etc.

This is a real can of worms.

Imagine a program, hacked or intentional, which blurs the recording of an individuals face.

Imagine sabatoging face recognition.

This was actually a plot in a Clancy novel over ten years ago. Clancy, who is a DEM, had CNN looping a damaged aircraft carrier film over and over again when the carrer was actually already at sea. In another novel, his villian crashed a plane into the Capitol...

Somewhere around here is a pic of a Pali youth throwing a rock. When the other, panned-back pic appears, he's surrounded by photogs.
Yes. I credit Free Republic with 'outing' the media maipulation. We see it all the time. The people here are like front line troops, totally grassroots, dedicated to exposing the lies, fraud, corruption.

But this stuff is manipulation on steroids.

I suppose we can 'assume' there'll be technological developments to detect it, actually, I think I'm going to pray there is. But the article is a little vague on the details of what exact form the "vigilance" it advises will take.

That series of pics is another good example of outed manipulating, but again, I'm just saying that this technology sounds fairly seamless, being changed - not 'manually' per se, but by programs, at the pixel level.

My previous post adresses the work you (as one, for example) do. My thanks.

The new technology makes all moving images suspect. Period.
