Principal Removed After Sex, Alcohol Allegations
Actions Follow Four-Month Investigation
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Public Schools board fired Wedgewood Middle School Principal Loy Koeller and accepted the resignation of a teacher Tuesday following allegations of inappropriate behavior on school grounds.
The actions followed a four-month investigation in the school, involving numerous incidents of drinking alcohol, taking drugs and having sex on school property, NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported.
According to a report released Tuesday, Koeller was the worst offender, Bowersock reported.
"It was more like a party house going on," said parent Misty Blevins. "Some of the teachers were drinking while they were in class and they would go to the office. I guess there were a couple of incidents where we were told there were affairs going on within the school."
"The teachers were going out, having other teachers buy beer and all that, and liquor, and come back and drinking in class," said student Scott Blevins.
The drinking and other activities allegedly took place for two years, Bowersock reported.
Witnesses testified they observed Abby Terry, a teacher, "in the principal's office taking off her shirt
leaving herself in a bra only and doing a seductive dance for the principal."
Some teachers brought "cocktails, mixed drinks and beer into the school at noon," according to a witness statement.
A witness statement said the principal would either be drunk or hung over and miss important meetings, including a National Honor Society banquet.
There are other allegations including a gun, cocaine, marijuana and the principal asking other staff members for their prescription medications, Bowersock reported.
"What we found during the course of the investigation was that these allegations were substantiated," said Columbus Public Schools spokesman Greg Viebranz.
The school board terminated Koeller's contract and accepted Terry's resignation.
Most of the alleged improprieties were said to have taken place in the school office. While some teachers were involved in the allegations, most teachers were not. Other teachers at the school tipped off investigators about what allegedly took place, Bowersock reported.
