Bush Drops 'Diversity' Hint About Nominee

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer 26 minutes ago

President Bush hinted on Monday that his next nominee for the Supreme Court would be a woman or a minority, saying that "diversity is one of the strengths of the country."

The president also expressed optimism that the Senate would confirm John Roberts as chief justice this week — which seems virtually certain.

Bush, asked about his next nominee, said "I will pick a person who can do the job. But I am mindful that diversity is one of the strengths of the country." The president is under pressure from many quarters — including his wife — to pick a woman or a minority for the seat of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is retiring.

Two-thirds of the 100 senators — Republican and Democrats alike — had already announced their support of Roberts, the conservative federal appeals court judge, as the successor to the late William H. Rehnquist before the Senate even started its final debate Monday afternoon. Underplaying Roberts' near-certain confirmation, Bush said he was cautiously optimistic that Roberts would be approved.

"John Roberts is qualified, impartial and committed to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law," said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

"He is precisely the kind of chief justice America deserves and I'm looking forward to debating his nomination on the Senate floor so he can be swiftly confirmed in time to lead the Supreme Court when it starts its new term on October 3rd."

A floor vote is planned for no later than Thursday.

I still think Edith Jones is under consideration.

"Diversity is our strength"

Seems like we elected a radical leftist posing as a conservative.

I've read that Edith Jones is a top contender, but I really won't be satisfied unless its Janice Rodgers Brown.

NAtural diversity is great, as long as the best cadidate is the one selected. Forced diversity kills.

No, but it sounds like it. I hope he's setting us up for a "go to matresses" conservative to stick a thumb in in the eye for all those wacky, pious liberals.

Janice Rogers Brown???

One can hope...

She'd be a smart pick. First, she was already approved for her current position so the Dems would have to justify why they would vote against her for the SCOTUS...plus justifying why they'd vote against a Black woman.

Not that he won't pick a woman or a minority, but I watched this on TV...he wasn't merely asked about the next nominee, but that question involved diversity of the next nominee...can't they report anything correctly? (that's rhetorical).

I'd be happy with Edith Jones, but I'd be deliriously happy with Janice Rogers Brown.

Wasn't it Abe Lincoln who said "Unity" is our strength, not "Diversity" -- as in "A house divided against itself cannot stand...."

?????

"Seems like we elected a radical leftist posing as a conservative."

And it looks like you have learned your lessons well from our mainstream media. First you misquote Bush, then you beat him over the head with your own misquote. He did not say "Diversity is our strength." He said "diversity is one of the strengths of the country." It is. And the fact that you have to create quotes to make your otherwise invalid point just goes to show how weak your point actually was. Maybe you should send your little note to Timmy Russert. He's looking for some more B.S. to report on next Sunday.
